History & Tradition

A long history of sound Catholic education can be attributed to our Edwin Avenue site. Several school buildings have existed on this property since 1889. Originally named St. Cecilia Catholic School, then changed to St. James in 1915, the school was finally dedicated to St. Rita of Cascia, “Saint of the Impossible” in 1922.

St. Rita, a widow who became a nun, suffered much for her lifelong devotion, died on May 22, 1457 and was canonized in 1900.

Our present staff continues the tradition of providing a balanced program of academics, arts and Gospel values.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Staff, students, parents and the church collaborates to maintain a positive and nurturing environment at St. Rita School. We recognize that an education in the most enabling environment must be provided for all students. It is a shared responsibility among school, home, church and community which provides students the opportunity to achieve their maximum potential.

At St. Rita School everything we do ensures the presence of a Catholic Environment. Throughout the day students realize opportunities to discover God in their lives.

In addition to the regular school program based on the Ministry Curriculum guidelines, St. Rita School also provides the following:

St. Rita Catholic School Celebrates Green Schoolyard
Students, staff and families at St. Rita Catholic School celebrated the greening of their school yard with a ribbon cutting ceremony on January 27th, 2011.

The project was undertaken under the leadership of the Catholic School Advisory Council, with the strong support of the Toronto Catholic District School Board and GreenHere, which has been working with the school since 2007 on a variety of initiatives including educational talks about the benefits of trees, tree care workshops (mulching and watering), spring bulb planting, and the creation of an environmental outdoor mural permanently mounted on the fencing in the school yard.

The School contacted GreenHere in the Fall of 2008 and a proposal was developed to remove some of the asphalt in the school yard. In 2009, the school received funding for the removal of the asphalt and the planting of 13 large native canopy trees.
