St. Stephen Takes up the Torch
Ready for a radical idea?! Why don’t we try for zero waste? Yep, that
means absolutely nothing. Sounds like a huge challenge doesn’t it? Some
people would even say it’s impossible, but if you don’t try, nothing can
be accomplished. This project started five years ago with students at
St. Sylvester in 2002 who started the race for zero waste. Of course
their goal couldn’t be accomplished in just one year. So in 2003
students from Prince of Peace continued this project. Both of these
schools have done great things to spread the word. You can click on 2002
and 2003 to see some of the stuff they researched and found out. The
torch has now been passed on to us, and we’re ready to continue the Race
to Zero Waste. True, it’s becoming more of a marathon, but we’re psyched
and ready to run. Here are some things we have already done and WILL be
doing.

We started by
examining our waste habits and the packages that were showing up in
our garbage. This got us to realize that there was much work to be
done |
 |
We’ve updated the
website (we didn’t eliminate the old content from 2002 and 2003
because it shows some of the progress that’s taken place.) |
 |
We’re continuing to
write letters to companies that have good or bad packaging |
 |
We’re trying to
hold an environmental conference for schools in our school board.
Young eager minds discussing the environment – that’s awesome! |
 |
We’re going to
perform the play What a Lot of Garbage |
 |
We’ve been in
contact with Sarah McGaughey and her husband Kyle Glover who are
actually trying to create zero waste (you can read about them from
the links page of our website)

We have a lot of work to do in this project. And all of our hard work
is going to be really pointless if people do not join our Race. No one’s
asking you to lace on your running shoes just yet. We began this project
in January by learning about the issues. The more we learned, the more
we gained an interest in it. Now it’s your turn. So go ahead and surf
the site. We’re sure you’ll learn some neat new stuff, and once you’re
done, we’ve got the baton ready to pass. On your mark, get set …. READ
