Zero Waste

Success Comes in All Forms

From Liz Parry, Canadian Youth Eco-Parliament:

Good Morning Roy!

Congratulations! You have been selected as one of the winning school for this year’s edition of the Youth Eco Parliament. There are two prize components: a trip to attend a national environmental conference in Vancouver, September 12-15 and a cash grant to help you further implement your eco - action project.

Trip to Vancouver: Please select one student that will represent your class/club in Vancouver. This student will be asked to produce a poster illustrating his or her class’/club’s eco project, to be presented at specific moments during the conference. The students will also have the chance to take part in outside activities, such as meeting with the head of sustainability for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games, and traveling to Whistler for some outdoor eco activities. We will work with the selected student to put together his/her poster throughout the summer. We leave it up to the teacher and students to decide on the selection process. In the past, some classes have held a draw, while others have based it on merit. The decision is entirely up to you. Whatever you decide, please make sure you forward the name and contacts of the selected student to us so we can stay in touch with him/her over the summer.

Cash grant: In Ontario, we have decided to award cash prizes to our winners, which for your school is up to $700. These cash prizes are meant to be matching in nature. Please tell us the approximate value of the funds your team/class has either raised through your eco project, or has had donated, and we will match that amount. Please also tell us what you intend to use the grant for. Finally, please let us know if you have a preference on having the grant awarded to you either before the end of the school year (likely difficult because of timing constraints) or in early September.

Please contact me with any questions you may have. Congratulations on a project well done!
