STUDENT ASSESSMENT and EVALUATION

Elementary & Secondary Schools

The goal of Catholic education is nothing less than a truly holistic formation of persons who will be living witnesses to the faith. Fulfilling the Promise, Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario ( ACBO).
The assessment and evaluation of students is intended to inform and improve learning and to ensure effective programming. A thorough understanding of student achievement requires three components:

Assessment…

the gathering, recording and analysis of information about a student’s work   and the provision of descriptive feedback for improvement.

Evaluation…

the making of judgments about the quality of student work by assigning a value to represent that quality  based on established criteria and levels of achievement.

Reporting…

the sharing of clear, accurate and timely information about     student achievement with parents, guardians, students and educators.

Proficiency

describes the level of a student’s knowledge, skills, behaviour, attitudes and values, relative to established standards or levels of achievement.  It answers the question: How is the learner doing?

Progress

describes the improvement in a student’s level of proficiency and reflects on personal effort and growth.  It answers the question: How is the learner improving?
