$  Reading Exercise:  top
Instructions:  Read the following passage and answer the comprehension questions.

                                             DO YOU HAVE THE SENSE OF A GOOSE ?

     When you live in a cold climate, every fall you see birds flying south for the winter.  When you see geese heading south for the winter, flying in a "V" formation, you might ask yourself  WHY they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. Scientists have discovered that flying in a “V” formation allows the birds to fly 71 percent farther than if they flew independently.

     This lesson is also important for humans; people who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily with the assistance of one another. When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the difficulty of trying to fly alone; so it quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front.  When the goose in the front gets tired, it moves back in the formation and another goose takes its place in the front. It is sensible to take turns doing difficult jobs, whether with people or with geese flying south.  Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up.  This is another important lesson for humans.  When someone is leading (or directing) us, what messages do we give when we “honk” from behind?  Do we offer encouragement, or do we offer criticism?

     The final, and probably most important lesson that geese can teach humans is also expressed in the birds’ behaviour.  When a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshot, it is often forced to leave the  formation.  If this occurs, two other geese also leave the group and  follow the injured goose in order to help and protect it.  They stay with the  injured goose until it is able to fly or until it dies.  Now do you have the “sense of a goose”?  Do you consider yourself part of a group?  In our society, are there just “leaders” and “followers”, or do we have a common goal?
