Curriculum

The curriculum guide was developed by the Continuing Education Department - Adult Education of the Toronto Catholic District School Board in order to assist instructors in planning relevant and effective adult ESL programs.  Our curriculum guide is available for sale - see Publications for Sale.

The predominant focus of the curriculum guide is to develop programs that are relevant and appropriate for the students. The expected outcome of such an approach is a highly motivated and engaged student population. The vehicle by which the Toronto Catholic District School Board strives to achieve such a goal is through a communicative, task-based approach to second language teaching.

The word “communicative” implies the communication of meaning in an interactive, learner-centered setting, while “task-based” suggests performing a language task. Tasks are the multitude of things we do with the language on a daily basis. The selection of tasks depends on their relevance for a particular group of students. The tasks are always determined through needs analysis. Thus, the central organizing feature of the curriculum guide is task-based planning.
