Archbishop Romero has seen many athletes excel in the high school sports arena. Below are those selected by the coaching staff who have earned a place in the Hall of Fame.
1996 - Sonia Furtado
Sonia
was a standout basketball and volleyball player, earning numerous MVPs and
three times being named Athlete of the Year. She led the
Senior Girls Basketball team to a birth in the TDCAA semi-finals in 1993.
1999 - Nuno Dos Santos
Nuno
played on more than 20 teams during his five years at Romero and coached nearly
as many. He is also a multi-MVP and George winner. Nuno was the Junior Boys
Athlete of the Year in 1997.
2001 - Linda Martins / Kathy Carrasco
Linda
Martins was a standout performer on cross-country, softball, soccer, basketball,
volleyball and badminton teams while a Romero athlete. A multi-MVP winner, as
well as an Athlete of the Year award in her rookie campaign. She placed seventh
in TDCAA Midget Girls Cross-Country and captured a division championship in
Senior Girls Volleyball in 2000. With her doubles partner, Kathy Carrasco, she
won a bronze medal in Badminton, and finished just out of the medals on two
other occasions.
Kathy
Carrasco was three times an Athlete of the Year, including twice as a senior. A
multi-MVP and George winner, Kathy captured a division title in Volleyball in
2000. With her badminton doubles partner, Linda Martins, she captured a bronze
medal and two fourth place finishes.
2003 - Melissa Scipio
Melissa
was likely the most gifted basketball player ever to pass through Archbishop
Romero. Her ball handling and court sense were second to none. She won a
Junior Girls Basketball Championship in 1999 and had two trips to 'AAA' OFSAA as
a Senior. She is a mutli-MVP winner while playing soccer and volleyball as
well.
2004 - Matthew Ferreira
Matthew
transferred from Marrocco with the sole purpose of playing baseball, a sport at
which he excelled; top 50 prospect, 2 time MVP, team captain, TDCAA all-star,
best catcher in the league, athlete of the year. He was a standout goaltender
and defenceman for the ball hockey team, in addition to being a very strong
student. At the 2004 athletic banquet Matthew walked away with 5 awards: Hall
of Fame Inductee, Athlete of the Year, Excellence in Athletics and Academics,
Baseball MVP and the George in Ball Hockey.
2004 - Andre Da Silva
Andre graduated in 2002, but was nominated and inducted into the hall two years after he left Romero, a testament to the impression he left on the Romero athletics community. Andre was a two time Senior Boys Athlete of the Year, a TDCAA champion with the soccer team and a high school OBHA champion with the Ball Hockey team. As well, he was a multi-MVP and George winner. A hardworking two way player and a favourite of his team mates and his coaches, Andre could always be counted on to give 100% for his team.
2005 - Jenny Fenech
Jenny
is likely the greatest athlete ever to attend Romero. Her list of
accomplishments is long and distinguished. She placed the 7th at the TDCAA
cross country championships as a midget and a senior, and became the only Romero
cross country runner to compete at OFSAA. She won three consecutive Athletes
of the Year, numerous MVPs (including four in 2005, every sport she played).
She competed at OFSAA basketball, and is a standout soccer and volleyball
player. She is also a member of the Romero All 15 teams in basketball, soccer
and cross-country.
2005 - Alicia Malachowska
Alicia
won three TDCAA medals in three different sports over her five years as a
Raider, becoming the first and only Romero athlete to accomplish that feat.
Silvers in Badminton, Tennis and a gold medal in the 50 metre freestyle in
Swimming. She was a motivated athlete and student, and an Athlete of the Year
and MVP winner. Alicia graduated in 2002.
2005 - Fred Pereira
Fred
is the only male to be selected to two Romero All 15 teams, Ball Hockey and
Soccer. He was Athlete of the Year, a multi-MVP winner, and a great basketball
player as well. Fred graduated in 2001 capturing a TDCAA championship as a key
mid-fielder with the Sr. Boys Soccer team, and winning the OBHA high school Ball
Hockey tournament. Fred was a skill player and brought a no-nonsense approach
to every sport he played.
2007 - Katherine Gregorio
Katherine's combination of work ethic, talent and dedication to Athletics and Physical Education at Romero are unmatched in Romero history. An outstanding soccer, basketball and volleyball player, Katherine earned numerous MVPs, MIPs and George Awards during her years at Romero. Katherine always led by example; games and practices, scorekeeping or helping the athletics department all showcased her ability, hard work and class.
2007 - Ricardo Batista
Capping off a stellar career at Romero with a trip to 'AA' OFSAA soccer, Ricardo could always be counted on to give 100%. Twice an Athlete Of The Year, and multi award winner, his skills and calm demeanor guided many a volleyball, soccer and basketball team to victory.
2003 - David Guzman
Though not a member of the Raiders Hall of Fame, David went on to a full
athletic scholarship for soccer at the University of Louisville. As a freshman,
he was the team's leading scorer and made the Conference All-Freshman Team. As
a sophomore, he had a more productive offensive season and earned First Team All
Conference honours and First Team All Region honours. His Junior year earned
still more accolades. In 2007 David signed with Toronto FC of the MLS.
2000 - Kadian Lecky

Also, not a full member of the Raiders Hall of Fame, Kadian is one of Romero's all time leading scorers, and was one of the key elements in Romero's 2000 TDCAA Senior Boys' Soccer Championship team which narrowly missed an OFSAA championship. He went on to a stellar college career at Seneca and Humber twice capturing the OCAA scoring title and twice being named to the All Canadian team, and in 2002 was named the CCAA Player of the Year. Kadian has gone on to play for both North York and Vaughan in the CSL.
