Senior Boys Soccer 2010-2011

April 2011 - The Soccer Season Archbishop Romero Spring Invitational featured four GTA champions.  Despite the frigid conditions, Romero was stellar throughout the pool play and earned a birth in the finals vs. Mt. Carmel.  Regulation time could not determine a winner and once again penalty kicks would separate gold from silver.  Let's just say... silver ain't so bad.  Bershon Roach Ferguson, team MVP.

April 2011 - The OSC was again the scene for yet another tournament.  Romero breezed through qualifying getting better with each game and earned a spot in the tournament of champions featuring some of Ontario's top teams.  After qualifiying for the semi-finals, 40 minutes could not determine a winner, and once again penalties would decide who would advance to the finals.  We left disappointed.

March 2011 - The indoor campaign started at the OSC 6-a-side tournament.  Romero again fielded 2 quality teams.  Both dominated their divisions and one moved on the semi-finals only to go down on penalties.

November 2010 - The 2010-2011 Senior Raiders started the fall campaign with high expectations, but reality quickly and smartly set in.  The Romero Fall Classic welcomed last year's 'AAAA' champions St. Theresa and featured 2 Romero teams.  The A team with a record of 1 win and 1 tie proceeded to the final to face St. Theresa.  The B team played fiercely and featured 2 goals by Kevin Arantes, but made an early exit from the tournament.  The final was a back and forth battle with the OFSAA champions ultimately prevailing on penalties.

The following week saw the boys in action at the McGuigan tournament at the Hangar.  Romero was the defending silver medalist.  This year's team, minus five starters, played hard in the cold, wet conditions.  The ball was not rolling our way and we departed with 3 losses.

June 5th - OFSAA.  It didn't end quite the way everyone had hoped, but the Raiders could still hold their heads high.  After finishing at the top of Pool B with an undefeated record and 9 goals for with only 3 against, we faced St. Christoper in the quarter final.  After 60 minutes and 20 more, the game was still deadlocked.  Penalty kicks were needed to decide the winner.  Paulo Moreira, Al James and Claudio Herrera calmly buried the ball, and David Corriea allowed only one goal securing a spot in the semis.  Host Kennedy were a strong side.  Romero battled fiercely, but injuries to key players Oliver Rivas, Alex Del Bono and captain and MVP Al James made it all but impossible to prevail.  Kennedy went on to win Gold.  In the Bronze medal match, Romero was wounded but not dead.  A late goal by Kyron Hall equalized the score and once again extra time would not decide the game.  Penalties.  Jesse Furtado, Leron Peterkin, Peterson Kyreme and Paulo Moreira all scored and David Correia, OFSAA team MVP, was once again dominant.  A bronze medal and great memories for an outstanding team.

May 30th - Romero wrapped up the regular season atop the west division with a record of 4 wins 0 losses and 2 draws, 17 goals for and 4 against.  In the playoffs Carr and St. Basil's were dispatched 3-0 and 1-0 respectively.  Dante once again proved our undoing, stopping us in the semi-finals with a 2-0 loss.  The boys have qualified for OFSAA and the train departs for Windsor on Wednesday, June 2nd.

May 14th - After not surrendering any goals during pool play, the Senior Raiders came out on top in the final Romero Invitational beating TDSSAA's Nelson Boylen 2-0.  Amid Fofanah was brilliant netting both goals for his team.

April 9th - The agony and the ecstasy.  The Raiders entered the Soccer Centre tournament of champions full of optimism, and despite two lightning fast goals against last year's 'AAAA' OFSAA champions, their momentum ground to a halt in the face of Edmund Campion's relentless onslaught.  The final score was 3-2 with the boys showing flashes of the team work that they will need to take them to TDCAA championship and OFSAA.  The boys ended the day with 1 win and 2 losses and many lessons learned.

April 1st - On March 29th the boys qualified for the Soccer Centre tournament of champions by defeating Iona on penalty kicks.  After only allowing 1 goal in the entire tournament, David Correia came up big again in the shootout.  Al James and Paulo Moreira both scored thus giving Correia the opportunity to stuff the Iona shooter and end the day.  He did so in fine style.  The boys play next on April 9th.

March 17th - The 2009-2010 Senior Boys Soccer team is in the middle of a strong indoor campaign.  A 2nd place finish at the Romero Invitational was quickly followed with a victory at the Soccer Centre Tournament which boasted teams from all over Ontario.  The Raiders allowed only 2 goals in 6 games as David Correia was brilliant in goal once again.  The Romero defence was tight offering little daylight for opposing forwards.  Team MVP Alex DelBono was instrumental in leading this defensive crew made up of mostly grade 11s: Renato Correia, Javon Samuel, Paulo Moreira and Oliver Rivas.  In the midfield Romero Invitational MVPs Al James and Leron Peterkin set the pace with their touch, defending and goal scoring abilities.  Our forwards generated countless scoring opportunities netting 8 goals with as many posts and near misses: Andrew Bustamante, Prince Munemo, Matthew Da Costa, Bershon Roach Ferguson, Jesse Furtado and Claudio Herrera.

October 31st - The Senior Raiders had a stellar showing at the McGuigan fall classic snaring second place.  The boys were gassed following a long day of competition, but still pushed eventual champions, Westview, to the limit.  Al James was named team MVP.  The Brebeuf tournament was one the boys might like to forget, though, it was an invaluable learning experience and an important tool for the coaching staff.  Still only allowing 2 goals in the 3 games, the boys failed to move on past the opening round.

September 10th - Unfinished business.  The Senior Boys Soccer team had their first meeting of the season, and as Coach Kelly held last year's division winning banner, he had two words for the assembled group,  "Unfinished Business!"
