LEARNING STRATEGIES - GRADE 9 - OPEN
1.0 CREDIT
This course introduces students to learning theories and strategies, prepares
them to become effective independent learners, and helps them to increase
their personal management skills, both in school and in other contexts.
Students will learn how to use reflective thinking, structured inquiry,
active reading, memorization, goal-setting strategies, and time, stress
management skills to identify and work towards their goals. The course
will increase their confidence, motivation, and ability to learn.

CAREER STUDIES - GRADE 10 - OPEN
0.5 CREDIT
This course teaches students how to develop and achieve personal goals
in education and work and contribute to their communities. Student learning
will include assessing their own knowledge, skills, and characteristics
and investigating economic trends, workplace organization, work opportunities,
and ways to search for work. The course explores post secondary learning
option, prepares students for community-based learning, and helps them
build the capabilities needed for managing work and life transitions.

Co-Operative Education
Grade 11
GWL 301, 1.0 CREDIT DESIGNING YOUR FUTURE, GRADE 11, 12 OPEN
This course prepares students to make successful transition to post secondary
work and education or training. Students will explore the realities and
opportunities of modern workplaces, while refining their employability
skills and learning how to manage their careers. Students will target
appropriate post secondary education or training options and begin to
implement an action plan for post secondary success.
NOTE: This one credit course is the in school component of the co-op elective.
Students taking this course must also plan to take the two credit out
of school component. An interview with a Co-op teacher is required to
ensure acceptance into the program.

DESIGNING YOUR FUTURE:
OUT OF SCHOOL COMPONENT, GRADE 11, OPEN
This course gives students an opportunity to acquire knowledge and t develop
skills in a career area of their interest to help them make more effective
career decisions Job opportunities include schools, hospitals, retail
business and the service industry
NOTE: The out-of-school component is worth two credits, and is take at
the same time as the in-school component

2.0 CREDITS
In this Coop program students match a previously taken subject or concurrently
taking a subject and link it to a related out-of-school work experience
NOTE: An application form must be Filled out and an interview with the
Coop teacher is required to determine the subject best suited for the
intended work placement, and to ensure acceptance into the program, Prerequisite:
Career Studies, Grade 10, Open
OYAP ONTARIO YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP
The OYAP Program is designed to promote careers in the skilled professions;
to make students aware of apprenticeship as a pathway to full time, life
long employment. At Marrocco/Merton, once students have completed TCJ
3C, they can plan to continue their study of CARPENTRY by taking TCJ 4C
which includes a preparation for apprenticeship component. Given further
interest to acquire work experience in the field, students can then choose
to apply for the four credit apprenticeship ship training program.
NOTE: Students must see a Guidance Counselor if they are interested in
applying to Carpentry/OYAP.

LEADERSHIP AND PEER SUPPORT
GRADE 11, OPEN
1.0 CREDIT
This course prepares and motivates students to provide leadership and
assistance to others in their schools and communities. Students will develop
skills in communication, interpersonal relations, coaching, leadership,
teamwork, and conflict management, and apply them in roles such as tutoring,
mentoring, and student council involvement. Students also learn the value
and complexity of social diversity, while acquiring an appreciation of
the importance of contributing to their communities and helping others
throughout their lives.
