Q: How does eClass online Program work? A: Students access course materials such as online readings, assignments, discussion boards and tests through our online systems called Blackboard and our new Desire to Learn (D2L). It is accessible from the Internet at http://eclass.tcdsb.org and Students need a userid and password to access the system. Students complete the assignments on their own time before the due date of the assignment. Most of our online courses have an online exam or final assignment. Final exams that require students to write the exam will be held at our designated in-class site at the Toronto Catholic District School Board. At any time, students can contact their teacher through the email provided at the mandatory session and the eclass moderators are also available at eregister@tcdsb.org or 416-222-8282 ext. 2135. This program is best suited for students with a strong independent work ethics or for those students wanting to advance in their studies. Requirements: Any Personal computer (Windows-based or Macintosh OS-based) and an Internet Connection (Dial-up, For EMS3O Media Studies we recommend a High speed connection to the Internet) We also expect students to have some previous experience with using wordprocessors (Microsoft Word), file management and surfing the internet. Q: How can I request CHV - Civics and GLC - Careers on the Online course request? You need to have 2 registration forms to hand in on the registration night. This means you would have to fill out the online form twice. Leave the second choice box empty and place a CHV or GLC in the primary course box for each request. Q: How long is the Mandatory Session? If this is your first time taking an eClass course, you can expect to take up to 2 hours for your session. If you have taken eClass before, you can expect your session will take up to an hour. Q: What is the Mandatory Session? A: This is the session that takes place for the course you registered for. You will be required to hand in the required documents and fees to attend this session. This is your opportunity to meet your teacher and understand how to use Blackboard or D2L, submit assignments, communicating with the teacher, course expectations, how to write the exam and who to contact incase something goes wrong (ie. due to personal problems, connection issues, viruses, etc.). There is a specific time and day that your session takes place at. Visit www.tcdsb.org/eregister/first_class.htm to find out what day and time your mandatory inclass session is at. You must attend the entire session in order to take the course. All sessions will take place at the Toronto Catholic District School Board -80 Sheppard Ave E (1 block east of Yonge on Sheppard Ave E). Q: I notice the mandatory session take place for an entire week or more. Do I have to attend all of them or can I attend any of them? A: There is a schedule that is posted at www.tcdsb.org/eregister/first_class.htm which will be SPECIFIC for your course that you registered for. In some cases, we will post your name on web so you know exactly which session we expect you to attend. You only need to attend the session for the course you enrolled into. If you registered for more than one course, you will need to attend more than one session. Q: Can I switch my time that I attend for the Mandatory Session? A: If you have a reason for switching the time, you must contact eregister@tcdsb.org as soon as you are aware that there is a conflict. If you are scheduled for a later time slot and would like to attend an earlier time slot, we may be able to accomodate you providing that someone who we were expecting at the earlier timeslot does not show. You can then take their time slot. However if all the students show for their timeslot, you will be required to wait for another opening or for your timeslot. *Switching days is difficult to accomodate unless we are offering multiple days of the same session. However please contact us before doing so we can accomodate you if possible. If you cannot attend our recommended times or schedule you will be withdrawn from the program. Please note we do not have make-up session. In case of a winter storm where the Director of Education as requested a night school closure, we will reschedule and posted an updated list. Those with conflicts must contact us immediately. Q: I have taken an eClass course before, do I have to attend the Mandatory session? A: All students are required to attend this session. It is extremely important that all students understand how to use Blackboard and D2L, submit assignments, communicating with the teacher, course expectations, how to write the exam and who to contact incase something goes wrong (ie. due to personal problems, connection issues, viruses, etc.). Therefore, if you do not attend the session, we will withdraw you from the course. Q: I have night school on the same evening that my mandatory session takes place. What do I do? We will provide you a note to certify that you were in attendance at a mandatory session for our program. We only need to see you ONE evening compared to the night school program. All TCDSB night school principals are aware of students taking eClass courses with us. You must attend our mandatory session if you would like to participate in the program. Should you have a concern, you may write us an email describing your unique situation. Q: Do I have to come in to write an exam? Courses such as Grade 12 English and Grade 12 Writer's Craft require students to write an exam in person. Other courses may have a final assignment as a replacement to the exam or the exam is held online where the student must be online at a specific time and day. Details of this information is provided at the mandatory session. Q: How do I get the textbook? Online courses use electronic print, therefore it is not provided. Courses such as Grade 12 English may require you to read novels that may not be available online. You may purchase these books or you can borrow them from the library. A booklist and how to use the electronic print is presented to you at the mandatory session. Q: What courses do you offer online? A: Unfortunately we only offer a limited selection of courses online. These are the courses we offer online:
