Primary division
Students are taught lessons related to healthy living, fundamental movement skills and
active participation. Our teachers have received a new resource document that highlights
movement activities and allows students to be actively involved in physical activities.
The program encourages students to participate on a regular basis in physical activities
that maintain or improve their personal fitness level. Through the "Know your
Body" health curriculum, students learn about healthy eating, growth and development,
personal safety/injury prevention and the proper use of medicines.
Junior division
The lessons continue to build on the components taught during the students
primary years. The focus within the physical education classes continues to be active
participation. Many aerobic activities are infused within the curriculum to ensure that
students continue to develop their own personal fitness levels. Students continue to
refine their basic movement skills through the use of lead-up games and dance activities.
Key concepts such as good sportsmanship, fair play, respect for officials, teamwork and
co-operation are highlighted. Students begin to learn about how body image and self esteem
influence eating habits and they being to identify the influences that affect their
decisions in regards to substance abuse.
Intermediate division
The focus shifts from lead-up activities to sport specific activities that require the
students to be physically active throughout all physical education classes. Preparing
students with the skills to participate in a variety of physical activities is essential
to the goal of physical education classes of promoting lifetime physical activity. In the
area of healthy living, students continue to apply decision-making skills, problem-solving
skills and refusal skills to respond to matters related to drug use and healthy eating
habits. Students are also taught to analyze situations that are potentially dangerous and
determine how to resolve or how to seek assistance in resolving these situations.
