The Hanen Centre is a recognized innovator in family-focused early language intervention programs and learning resources for parents and professionals around the world. As a charitable organization founded more than 30 years ago, The Hanen Centre is committed to making a difference in the lives of young children by supporting and collaborating with the important adults in their lives. This applies to children who have language delays, who are at risk for language delays, as well as to those whose communication is developing as expected.

The Hanen Centre’s mission is to provide the important people in a young child's life with the knowledge and training they need to help the child develop the best possible language, social and literacy skills.

Hanen does this by:

  • creating training programs in which parents and other caregivers learn how best to promote children's communication and language development during everyday activities
  • training speech-language pathologists/therapists to lead Hanen Programs for parents and teachers and to use the Hanen approach in their day-to-day clinical work
  • training family support professionals to lead programs for parents of children at risk
  • sharing information on promoting children’s communication and language development with all professionals who work with young children
  • developing outstanding, user-friendly learning materials, grounded in research
  • conducting leading-edge research in our field

The program, designed for groups of parents, is aimed at fostering the parent-child relationship and promoting the child’s everyday opportunities to learn social and language skills.

  • The You Make the Difference Program is supported by a practical and colourful guidebook and instructional DVD. These resources may be used by parents and community workers involved in the program, or by anyone interested in acquiring practical, research-based strategies for enhancing parent-child interactions and promoting early-language skills.
