THE MAUREEN O’NEIL
SUMMER CAMP FUND

History  

The children’s Summer Camp Fund recognizes Maureen O’Neil, a former Chief Social Worker with the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Maureen retired from TCDSB after 32 years as a School Social Worker. 

Maureen began her career with TCDSB in 1970 where she spent twenty years in direct service in the “inner city” schools of Toronto and twelve years as the Chief of the Social Work Department.  Her dedication to helping children achieve, despite their social and emotional disadvantages, have remained a focus throughout her career. Both in her direct practice and in her administrative role, Maureen has always been an advocate for and deeply committed to special needs students and to those children who are financially less fortunate. 

For twelve years, Maureen has been intensely involved in the work of the Metropolitan Toronto Catholic Education Foundation, as a Director, a President and an Executive Director. In her work with MTCEF, she has always had a special interest in raising funds to provide needy students with a summer camp experience. This Summer Camp Fund will begin to address the financial needs of these students. 

Description of Fund 

This fund will be available for TCDSB students who require financial assistance to attend summer camp (either day camp or overnight camp).  

Criteria 

In order for the most needy students to be assisted, TCDSB Social Work staff must be involved in the preparation of the applications for funding. In most cases, the applicant will be a student known by the social worker or will have been referred by the local school principal.  

The Camp must be one that has been approved by the Ontario Camping Association
 

Application  

An application form, available through the Social Work Department, must be completed for each student.  

The TCDSB School Social Worker must submit the application form to the Maureen O’Neil Summer Camp Fund Committee c/o Social Work Dept. Catholic Education Centre.         

Selection Process 

The Maureen O’Neil Summer Camp Fund Committee will review the student’s application and make the final decision based on the information received.  The application will then be forwarded to MTCEF so that funds can be provided directly to the various camps or to the local school in the event of pre-payment to the camp.  

Donations 

Donations to the Summer Camp Fund are encouraged and can be made directly to MTCEF (Maureen O’Neil Summer Camp Fund).

SUMMER CAMP FUND 

1. Please submit your request on the Maureen O’Neil Summer Camp Fund application form and forward to Summer Camp Fund Committee, Social Work Department, CEC.
2. Indicate camp to which the cheque should be addressed or if pre-paid the name of the local school.        
3. The request cannot exceed $100.00.  Exceptional circumstances may be considered for special needs students.
4. It may be for summer residential or day camp 
5. The camp must belong to or be affiliated with the Ontario Camping Association.  
6. The family has obtained and filled out an application for a camp. Requests for funding will be looked at on a first come first served basis. The submission of the application to the camp need not have occurred until confirmation of funding. 
7. Request must be submitted by May 15, 2003.
