Summer Hours--Elementary school offices remain open until July 3rd. They will re-open on August 25th. The Catholic Education Centre is closed on Fridays beginning July 11th and ending August 15th. It is also closed for a two-week period from July 28th to August 8th.

81% of TCDSB Students Succeed in Most Recent Literacy Test--Eighty-one per cent of first-time eligible Toronto Catholic District School Board students were successful on the 2008 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test.--Details
 

Congratulations to the following:

  • Kateri Vrakking, Grade 7 teacher at St. Matthew Catholic School, has earned a spot on Canada's Olympic Team

    and will be competing this summer in Beijing, China. Kateri secured her position as Canada's sole female Archer when she recently competed in the World Cup event in Boe, France. She will also be one of the athletes representing Canada in the opening ceremonies.

  • Vice-Principal recognized by Math Association--Congratulations to Anthony Azzopardi, vice-principal of the North York campus of Msgr. Fraser College. He was recognized with the OMCA 2008 Innovation and Excellence Award for contributions to mathematics education in Ontario. The Ontario Mathematics Coordinators Association (OMCA) is a provincial organization representing math coordinators, resource teachers and consultants.

  • Angel Foundation Award Winners--Jenna Hijazi from Marshall McLuhan, winner of the Carmela Murdocca Literacy Bursary; Manuel Cardama from St. Mary's and Teresa Waihenya from James Cardinal McGuigan, winners of the TCDSB Employee Credit Union Student Bursary; Ray Alba from Cardinal Leger, winner of the Keith Tavares Spirit of Inclusion Bursary; Nicole D'Amario from Cardinal Carter and Christina Kosar from Michael Power/St. Joseph, winners of the Mario Gasparotto Visual Arts Bursary; Tom Sinclair from Neil McNeil, first ever winner of the Mary Jane McKeen Skilled Trades Bursary; Antonio Giuliano from St. Mary's, winner of the Sandra Montgomery Student Bursary and St. Paul Catholic School, winner of the George Ermellini Literacy Award.--Details

  • St. Bonaventure Catholic School--the second prize winner in the 2007-2008 Canadian National Poetry Contest for young poets aged 7-12. The school was selected from among 500 across the country and received a cash prize of $100 prize and a certificate. The submissions are published in the anthology of verse entitled "Puppy Dogs and Roses".

  • St. Michael's Choir School on the release of their new CD, "From Courts on High"--Details

  • Tom Leon Student Bursary Recipients--The Angel Foundation for Learning and TCDSB extend sincere congratulations to Antun Pavelic of Michel Power/St. Joseph, Devin Dzelme of Brebeuf College, Patrice Mitchell of Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts, and Misakura Tsukimoto of St. Joseph's Morrow Park.--Details

  • Miller Thomson Foundation Awards--Among the recipients of this year's national scholarship program are: Anna Kinio from St. Joseph's College, Jennifer Lee from St. Joseph's Morrow Park and Andrea Wadsworth from Marshall McLuhan.

  • Millennium Scholarship Foundation Excellence Award Winners--Elisa Cheng and Jennifer Lee from St. Joseph's Morrow Park are among the recipients.

  • Winning Proposal--Loretto Abbey is one of two winners of the $10,000 School Proposal Contest by Certified Management Accuntants of Ontario School Proposal Contest for their proposal to create a photo lab at the school.

  • CUPE Local 1328 Award of Merit Recipients--Jane Renzetti, Library Technician from St. Gabriel Lalemant and St. Jean de Brebeuf; Helen Arduni, Head Secretary at James Cardinal McGuigan; Lily Weston, Education Assistant, St. Raymond; Ingrid Salt, Child and Youth Worker at St. Francis de Sales; Mary Jane Nice, ESL Instructor at Mary Ward; Agata Malik, ESL Nursery Worker at St. William; Lena Morra, Student Supervisor at Michael Power/St. Joseph.

  • CUPE Local 1328 Student Bursary Winners--Amanda Leo and Antonio Lombardi.

  • Rugby Winners--Marshall McLuhan Rebels have won their second straight TDCAA senior boys rugby title.

  • Tennis Champ--Sergiu Laza from Marshall McLuhan emerged victorious at the OFSAA Tennis Festival held at the Rexall Centre June 2nd and 3rd.

  • Soccer Silver--The boys' soccer team from St. Basil-the-Great finished in second place at the quad-A provincial championships held in Windsor on June 11th.

  • City Track and Field Winners--St. John's Catholic School finished in the top spot with 101 points in this year's elementary city meet. James Culnan (71 points) and Our Lady of Sorrows (68 points) were the finalists.--Detailed Results

  • OECTA Young Authors Award Winner--Michelle Lo, St. Henry, winner in the grades 7-8 poem category; Kimberly Tam, Our Lady of Peace, winner in the JK-SK non-fiction French category; Stefania Lista, Cardinal Carter Academy, winner of the grades 9-10 non-fiction French category; Regine Wan, Loretto Abbey, winner in the grades 11-12 non-fiction French category

  • National Skills Canada Gold Medallist--Kathleen Gatti from Cardinal Newman, gold medal winner at the national level in the prepared speech category.--Details

  • Ontario Chess Champion--Grade 11 student Ashley Lu Russo of Loretto College School received the Bronze Medal at the May 17, 2008 Ontario Girls' Chess Championships.

  • 2008 ESP Showcase Winners--Congratulations to the many students and staff who were recognized for their achievements--Details

  • Skills Canada Winners--Toronto Catholic District School Board captured three gold medals in this year's version of the Skills Canada Competition in Kitchener-Waterloo's RIM Park. TCDSB winners are: Kathleen Gatti - Cardinal Newman S.S. (Prepared Speech), Jennifer Lee - St. Joseph Morrow Park S.S. (Graphic Design) and James Hong/Patrice Mitchell - Cardinal Carter S.S.- (Geographic Information Systems). Kathleen Gatti moves onto the National Skills Canada Competitions in Calgary, Alberta, from May 23 - 28, 2008.
