Zero Waste

More Things That Make You Go HMMMM

By: Michael Johnson Roach

Plastic, Plastic Everywhere

Plastic, plastic and just more plastic. Are you tired of seeing plastic everywhere you go? Well get used to it. Have you ever noticed that when you buy a pack of erasers that each individual eraser is covered in plastic? I don’t think we need erasers to stay fresh (so what’s the plastic for?. The erasers are already sealed in a plastic case so it’s not a security thing. So why ARE erasers in plastic? The extra packaging has to cost the businesses money as well. Strange, or should we say HMMMM.

Balance Displays

C.I.B.C. offers balance displays on their screen. Why do other banks offer them on paper? It’s a waste of trees. You may think it's just a balance display. Well think about this. Millions upon millions of people get balance displays on paper. If every bank gave balance displays on screens only, think about the thousands of trees that could be saved, and the amount of oxygen we get. So if SOME banks can offer balance displays on screens, why can’t ALL banks do that. Hmmmm.

Confusing Cups

Have take out cups ever confused you? Well… They've confused me. Some are paper, some are styrofoam, and others are plastic. Doesn’t it make sense to make cups that help the environment? Choose the one that can be recycled or composted instead of going in the garbage. Companies and governments needs to work together on this. And better still, it may seem odd but carrying a reusable stainless steel water bottle or mug with a lid would actually be the best thing you could use. Carry your mug or stainless steel water bottle next time you go to Tim Hortons or McDonalds or other restaurants. I guarantee that they will fill your stainless steel mug or water bottle with the drink that you ordered. After all, all they want is customer satisfaction, and wouldn’t it satisfy YOU to care about the environment. Hmmm.

The Ketchup Case

What’s up with those fast food ketchup packages? Do restaurants really need to give them out? I mean think about it. For starters if you’re going home, don’t you already have ketchup there? And if you’re staying there, why not have refillable ketchup bottles that can be used. If Zero waste means caring for the environment and reducing our waste, then we need to start with small steps. Lose the ketchup packages and give praise to the mighty Ketchup Bottle! Hmmmmm.
