Our Actions
There have been so many things that have happened in this project.
There are so many things that are still to come. This is just a brief
overview of what's happened so far, and what's still to come.
Research - Like any good research project, the more we
learned, the more questions we had. And the more questions we had, the
more research we did. It all started from some websites
Mr. Fernandes gave us to research. They had some great info and they got
our minds turning.
Discussions - When you're interested in what you're
learning, you start to have discussions. We had plenty of discussions on
this topic and as we listened to each other's thoughts, we started to
consider many different angles on the issue of zero waste
Fact Sheets - Once our thoughts started to come
together, we decided to make a fact sheet of what we thought the main
issues were. It took a lot of revising and rewriting, but we finally
narrowed it down to three pages - the first three pages of our website are
our fact sheet.
Letters to Companies - We knew that one way to affect
change was to reach business groups. We looked at packaging that we didn't
approve of, and sent letters to companies telling them of our opinion.
We've only had two responses so far. Where are the rest of the answers?
We're going to follow up with these companies to find out more.
Divide duties and form committees - Each
student has been involved in some way in this project. We've had writing
committees, art committees, waste audit committees, display groups, and
more. We all worked with our strengths.
The Writing Committee started working content for a website
and a play. You're seeing the website. The play will be premiered on Earth
Day - April 22
The Art Committee started working on pictures. We have some
great artists in our class and their skills are on display in our
website.
The Display Committee started working on displays to educate
others about zero waste. We've put together display boards to teach the
students in our school about the issue of zero waste.
Waste audit of school - To show how committed we are,
we're picking through our school's garbage. We've analyzed each class's
garbage for a one-week span, and are giving presentations to each class in
April to help them understand how they can reduce their classroom
garbage.
As part of our action plan, we're going to try to enact Task force
2010's three-stream plan in each class for a week. This means students are
going to try to separate their waste into three bins: One for organics,
one for recyclables, and one for garbage.
Letters to politicians - We know that change will only
come about with help from the government. We've sent letters to our
municipal, provincial and federal government representatives telling them
what we hope to achieve. We're planning to have them attend our big event
on April 22.
