Zero Waste

Our Thoughts

Each Canadian produces 1.7kg of wate each day (roughly our body weight in garbage every single month)."The only way we will have zero waste is if we all do our best and not give up."
Steve: Grade 8

"I think that trying to achieve zero waste is great. If we can eliminate all the garbage from Canada's 10,000 landfills, we would be making huge improvements to our environment."
Marie: Grade 8

Success Stories

"I think what Guelph's doing is great. They've reduced so much of their waste with only two containers."
Alison: Grade 7

"What's going on here? Guelph and Nova Scotia have cut down on garbage. Toronto is a much more powerful place. Why can't they get a good garbage program."
Clayton: Grade 8

Businesses

"Only about 1 in 5 cookie companies have eliminated plastic wraps from their products. We did experiments proving that you can package cookies without plastic wrap and it still stays fresh. Come on, cookie companies and do the right thing."
Laura: Grade 8

"Businesses want money and we want a good environment. Those two things don't mix, at least to most companies. We have to force companies to follow other ones that are doing the right thing towards our environment."
Michael: Grade 8

Government

Canadians take home more than 55 million plastic shopping bags each week, or almost 8 million every day! A smart move would be to bring your own shopping bags, or use the boxes provided by stores like No Frills or Price Chopper."I think the government is finally doing a good job, if what they say is true about Task Force 2010. I think now the government should try to stick to their plan of getting zero waste."
Chris: Grade 7

"To be able to reach zero waste, we need the government to do something, but why aren't they doing more?"
Mark: Grade 7

How We Can Improve

"We can keep paying attention to what we recycle. Before, we didn't put anything into the recycling bin."
Yazri: Grade 8

"Companies need to let go of the past and switch to more efficient styles of packaging. Until this happens, we cannot achieve zero waste. I guess we have to tell companies to do the right thing."
Alan: Grade 8

"One thing to improve in order to achieve zero waste: Tell companies not to make products that will hurt the environment."
Nicole: Grade 8

What You Can Do

"Very simple things like changing your mindset can achieve Zero Waste."
Peter: Grade 8

"You can help by not buying stuff that's not recyclable. If it's going to go in the garbage, then don't buy it."
Michael: Grade 8

"We can help with zero waste by doing small things. If we just do things like using a J-cloth instead of a paper towel for cleaning up, using both sides of a paper, and checking products to see if the #1 or #2 symbol is on the bottom. (This means they can be recycled). Just by doing little things like this, we can help reach the goal of zero waste!"
Catherine: Grade 7

Less garbage = Less Collection

What We Have Learned

"What I learned is that reducing is the number one goal for the future."
Aldon: Grade 8

"I've learned that only #1 and 2 can be recycled in Toronto. The others are sent to the landfill."
Marco: Grade 7

"What I've learned is that reusing, reducing and recycling helps the future and the world."
Kyle: Grade 7
