Zero Waste

Plastic Water Bottles

by David Nguyen

The plastic water bottle is good for many reasons. It’s also bad for many reasons. The plastic water bottle can carry water almost everywhere. Once you’re finished with it, you can recycle it. You can reuse it, as long as it doesn’t get crushed! Although the plastic water bottle may have your vote, did you think of the negative sides yet?

Water bottles are great, but they waste a lot of plastic, which is made from non-renewable oil. Plastic water bottles are expensive. If you buy them over and over, that would add up to a lot of money. And it’s not the best idea to reuse plastic water bottles. There are some health concerns.

Did plastic water bottle users ever think of using a reusable water bottle? You only have to pay once so it will save you a lot of money. And you can fill it with a natural resource, tap water.

Have you ever considered the number of water bottles sold per day? Per month? Per year? Anyone know? The Beverage Marketing Corporation says that Canadian per capital consumption has gone from 28 litres in 1998 to 66 litres in 2006. Now, stop and think, 10 years ago - was anyone buying them? Stats Canada says 3 in 10 households indicate that they drink bottled water. How many billions of dollars are spent on water bottles and again, consider how that money would be used to keep our natural resource of water clean and drinkable. So next time you’re thirsting for some water, what will YOU do?
