What to do at Fast Food Restaurants & Grocery Stores
Have you ever wondered how much garbage is
produced in restaurants? Just think about it - all the ketchup packages,
napkins, and cutlery for take out usually end up in a land fill.
What can we do? Instead of asking for ketchup packages, we can reduce
the amount of garbage we use by using refillable ketchup bottles. Think
about how much garbage would be reduced!
Also, think about how much money could be saved if restaurants started
using reusable ketchup bottles instead of millions upon millions of
disposable ketchup packages!
Now, think about the grocery stores and how much
garbage they produce. Think of all the plastic bags each grocery store
produces a day! Instead of using plastic bags what can they do? What do
you think would happen if they used boxes, or charged people for using
plastic bags, or using deposit/return for bags? This last idea is new,
it’s different, but it’ll work! If you brought your plastic bags back to
the grocery store, and they gave you 25 cents for each bag, how many bags
could be used again? If it works for shopping carts then it can work for
plastic bags.
What can you do? Start by saying no to excess waste from fast food
restaurants. If you've going home, say no to plastic cutlery, napkins and
ketchup packages. When you grocery shop, reuse your plastic bags, or shop
where boxes are provided if you don't want to carry a bunch of plastic
bags in your pocket. Small things can make a big difference. Go ahead and
try! |
