Small Steps
By: Jordana & Sophia
Have you ever thought about helping our environment, but didn’t do it
because you thought it was a big task? Well, if this is you, then keep
reading to learn how you can take some small steps to a greener world.
These are some small steps on how you can help the environment:
1. Try to get your school set up with green (a.k.a.
“compost”) bins.
2. Start using the three R’s! If your family and school do not use
the three R’s, you should remind them! You would
be doing a good deed for the environment if
you did. Oh and the 3 R’s are: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
3. Have a guest speaker come into your classroom or school
to educate you and your school friends!
4. Create an Eco club and share all of your ideas with each other.
5. Use re-useable containers, lunch bags, cloth bags, stainless
steel water bottles etc…
6. Have waste free days at school, work and at home! We’re doing
Waste Free Wednesdays. No garbage cans at
ALL in our school.

And here are some things to consider:
49% of our population lives in houses and 51% live in apartments.
Considering apartments don’t have green bins,
this is significant.
75 tractor trailers travel 800 km each day to Michigan, USA with
Toronto’s garbage. Do the math – that’s a lot of
garbage being moved from place to place. Why not just make
less?
In Toronto, over 1 million Tim Hortons cups are used daily. We can put
the cup in the green bin but the lids go in
the garbage. Make sure you do this properly.
