Some thoughts from St. Stephen students on Zero Waste
Hala:I learned that Task Force 2010, is trying to achieve zero
waste. Recycling is good but it is not that great because the trucks
picking up the recycled items are still polluting. Reducing and reusing
is much better than recycling
Sade:I learned that it's possible to create zero waste if you put
effort into it and that we can all produce zero waste if everyone cared
about the environment.
Nina: I learned about good and bad packaging .Also I learned what
items go into the green bin ,recycling ,or the garbage.
Carolyn: I learned about lots of items that could go into the green
bin. For instance, I didn’t know I could put kleenex and muffin paper in
there. I also learned that not every product needs plastic. Why can’t
businesses stop putting plastic around popcorn and cookies?

Marcos: I learned that we don’t need plastic bags when we grocery
shop. There are lots of other ways to bring home your groceries.
Jofina: I learned that every province except Ontario and Manitoba has
a deposit return system for beverage containers. In Ontario, only Macs, the
Beer Store and the LCBO do that. Why can’t we do it for ALL containers?
Joe: I learned that fast food restaurants should pay more attention to
zero waste. I wrote a letter to Wendy’s to see if they can become more
environmentally friendly.
Annessa:I learned that recycling is not as good as reducing because
when we recycle it goes to factories which pollute and when you reduce you
are making less garbage and less items needed to be recycled. Also I learned
there are actually people trying to reduce and one example would be Sarah
and Kyle who we got to go grocery shopping with.
