Zero Waste

Task Force 2010 in Action

Task force 2010 is officially here. It started in Etobicoke in September of 2002. The green bin is coming to Scarborough in the summer of 2003. Etobicoke residents have been given two green bins. One is a large one for the curb, and the other one is a small one for the inside of your home.

Use the Green Bin!One third of our garbage can be composted instead of being sent to the landfill. A lot of people still fill up the garbage. That is resulting in a major problem; not only for the environment, but also for our taxes. Keele Valley dumpsite is closing due to lack of space. From now on, we have to ship all our garbage to private landfills in Michigan! That will raise the price to nearly 300% more in our taxes! That’s why the green bin program is such a great program.

You can put almost anything into the green bin; even items you would never even think of recycling. Here’s a list of the items that can go into the green bin:

Paper plates, cups
Soiled paper towels, napkins, tissues
Soiled paper food packaging - i.e. microwave popcorn bags, ice cream boxes, frozen food packages
Butcher paper
Fast food paper
All fruits and vegetables
Meat and fish products (shell fish, bones, skins, fat)
Oils and fats, bacon grease, lard
Pasta, bread and cereal
Dairy products, cheese, egg shells
Coffee grinds and filters, tea bags
Candy (paper wrappers ok, but no foil/plastic wrappers)
Flowers and dried flowers
Baking goods, herbs & spices
Diapers, incontinent pads, sanitary products
Household plants, including soil
Kitty litter and dog feces
Animal bedding from bird/hamster cages

The green bin will reduce loads of garbage in Toronto, and save you a ton of money, by not sending all the garbage to Michigan.

The waste in the green bin will be picked up every week, as opposed to regular garbage pick up every two weeks, This means if you don't start using the green bin you'll have a lot of smelly garbage for two weeks. Moral is: Use the green bin!

For more information on where to get more green bins, what other items can go into the green bin, or any other question you may have, check out the task force 2010 green bin website:
