Holy Name School Learning Plan
The Holy Name School Learning Plan is a detailed account of the goals of the school for the coming academic year.
The Plan is a collaborative effort on the part of staff and the parent community. The three broad categories:
are the broad goals provided by the Toronto Catholic District
School Board. The secondary categories in each area are taken from the
Leading Student Achievement goals. A more specific discussion of the 7
areas is available
here.
Nurturing Our Catholic Community
The Holy Name school vision acknowledges the importance
of mutual respect for one another and the earth, the importance of a strong
prayer and liturgical life in the school, and the importance of communicating
our good news to our school community and beyond.
A School Climate:
- Rewarding and acknowledging positive behaviours of our
students through our “Gotcha” awards program.
- Continuing our efforts to reduce our ecological footprint
and honour God’s earth through the Ontario Eco-schools program.
- Providing a school environment founded on the principles
of responsibility, reliability, and respect; and
- Celebrating our successes through monthly masses and
term masses for each division in our school (i.e., primary, junior,
and intermediate).
- Improving liturgies by: establishing a school choir for
school masses; assisting parents to help their children learn the parts
of the mass; and enhancing student participation in school masses.
Trust Among Community Members:
- Improving communication to parents and the community
through our school website.
- Establishing a system of class parents throughout the
school to enhance
- parental involvement in classrooms and the school.
- Providing ready access and participation for parents
in realizing our school goals.
- Providing leadership opportunities for students through
our social justice and ecological committees.

Improving Student Learning and Achievement
The Holy Name school vision acknowledges the importance
high expectations for all students. Our staff is committed to modeling
best practices in learning with a focus on Literacy and Mathematical instruction.
High Expectations:
- Focus on detailed project work that sets high goals for
students and provide structure and examples for completed work.
- Enhanced use of rubrics (detailed expectations/instructions
for students) and exemplars for student work.
- Student of the Month Awards acknowledging the improvement
of student in their academic work (in process, content, and group work).
Focused Instruction:
- Detailed SMART Goals (Strategic, Measurable, Attainable,
Results-oriented, Time-bound) in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics in
each of the three school terms.
- Key assessments at the end of each term in Reading, Writing,
and Mathematics to provide the school and parents with detailed information
on student achievement.
- Reviewing classroom instructional strategies in weekly
teacher team meetings.
- Block scheduling for Reading, Writing, and Mathematics
for each classroom. Integration of Religious Education, Social Sciences
(i.e., Social Studies; Geography and History) and Science program with
emphasis on Reading, Writing, and Mathematical strategies

Building Capacity to Lead and Learn
The Holy Name school vision acknowledges the importance

Professional Learning Community:
- Establishing School Planning Team to coordinate school
objectives for the school year.
- Continue Teacher Learning Teams, building collaboration
among staff in meeting school goals.
- Coordinating assessments, key expectations in Reading,
Writing, and Mathematics, and high yield instructional practices.
Teacher Efficacy:
- Building co-teaching opportunities for teachers in
order to review instructional practices in Mathematics.
- Attendance at School Board workshops in Literacy and
Mathematics and sharing experiences through Teacher Learning Teams.
