Welcome to Week 14! We know we are approaching Christmas because the tree is in the front foyer, TA Christmas activities are being organized, and our annual Christmas concerts are just a few days away. The next two weeks are going to be busy and full of cheer.
Thanks to all staff who participated in professional development sessions, or took our students on trips last week: Tony D’Agostino, Fred, Meghan, Marion, and Anna Sersanti’s Senior PHE and Science trip to view Body Works; Lynda Dever, Karen Erle, Mary Louise, Violet, Susanna Mak, Bogdan, Sandra, and Kara’s Student Success Workshop; Angela’s computer in-service; Marion’s mentor training; and Silvia and Vida’s AWD2O1 trip.
Thanks, also, to the staff that remained behind and covered areas to allow these events to happen.
Appreciation is also extended to: Jen Hayes and Dana for facilitating the Grade 9 OASIS Assembly; Mary-Lynn and the Gender Justice group for helping us memorialize the Montreal Massacre; Derek, Wendy Jones, Mary Louise, Peter Petrasek, and Anna Sersanti for their leadership in Friday’s PA Day, and to all the facilitators of the small group activity including Lisa Bailey, Matt Candiotto, Paul Cerre, Maureen Collie, Len, Karen Erle, Lee, Violet, and Maureen McAndrew; and Carol, John Notten, and Paulette for organizing such an enjoyable tribute to Santo.
Thanks to everyone for two very successful Parent-Teacher Interview sessions. There was a high turn-out and all parents/guardians were appreciative of the opportunity to meet and chat with their child’s subject teachers.
Last Monday marked the last day for our college and university fall visits. Over the past 2 ½ months, we have welcomed representatives from thirty-seven institutions. Thank you to the Guidance Department, especially Paul Cerre, who organized the visits, which offered our students the opportunity to become well-informed of their post-secondary options.
Our Tennis team had a strong showing at the TDCAA finals at York University with Keerthana Gunendran earning the bronze medal in the Junior Girls Singles. Thanks to Coaches Simone and Titus for volunteering their time to the team.
All TAs are asked to refer to Halyna’s email regarding the January 21 EQAO Mathematics Assessment and the list of Grade 10 students who were deferred from last June’s assessment. We need your help in notifying and monitoring your advisees about the preparation sessions offered by Bogdan and Halyna. These sessions should be presented as mandatory attendance for these students to ensure they are prepared for the assessment.
Each year the TCDSB celebrates unique school programs with Exemplary Practice Awards. Applications for this award must be received by January 29, 2010. Please refer to the email and attachment sent last week from the board.
The UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen is only hours away! Greenquest will be working hard to promote Vote Earth this week. All staff and students are invited to visit www.earthhour.org and choose to Vote Earth. By taking a few moments to Vote Earth, we can urge world leaders to agree to ambitious reduction targets and take the first steps towards preventing global warming.
Monday, December 7 is Day 10. The cafetorium will be closed for all periods except lunch for the Christmas Concert rehearsal. There will be a College Application Seminar during period 3 in the Computer Lab. Sandra Pezzetta and Joanna Morra will have a joint TA lunch and bowling competition. During lunch, the Admin Team will meet with the SAC executive, and all staff interested in joining Ward’s Book Club are asked to meet in the library. If you are interested but cannot attend the meeting, please speak to Maureen Collie or Derek. Staff participating in the Emergency First Aid/CPR Training with Paul Tarsitano will meet in Room 233 from 2 – 5 p.m.
Tuesday, December 8 is Day 1. Dave Emer’s Senior Tech students will visit Local 183. The College Application Seminars continue during period 3 in the Computer Lab. Mary-Lynn and the Gender Justice Group will show the film “Polytecynic” to follow-up last week’s Montreal Memorial. The screening will be in the cafetorium during lunch until period 5. Maria Scarano & Marie Ventura, Alex, and Lucy Valentini will have TA Christmas lunches. Participants in the Emergency First Aid/CPR Training will complete their certification from 2 – 5 p.m. in Room 233. Any teachers who are potentially interested in leadership roles with the TCDSB are invited to attend an information meeting at the CEC beginning at 4 p.m. Patricia is at a K-12 meeting in the morning, and Derek is at a Safe Schools workshop in the afternoon. Violet will be in all day!
Wednesday, December 9 is Day 2. The cafetorium will be closed for all periods except lunch for the Christmas Concert rehearsal. Meghan and the Senior PHE students travel to the Toronto Climbing Academy. Violet and selected teachers will participate in a Teaching Learning Critical Pathway In-service in the morning at Libermann. University Application Seminars will take place during periods 2 and 3 in the Computer Lab. Patricia is at a cafeteria meeting at the CEC from 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Department Heads will meet in the Library Conference Room at 2 p.m. and all staff are invited to the Christmas Concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Cafetorium.
Thursday, December 10 is Day 3. Marissa and Mark Morra will take students from HRT3M2 to the ROM. Michelle Albert will travel to Holy Spirit for a PLN session with the MAP4C1 students. Wendy Cassibault will attend the Librarian meeting at Don Bosco beginning at 2 p.m.
If you were not able to attend Wednesday’s Christmas Concert, make sure you plan to attend tonight. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Cafetorium.
Friday, December 11 is Day 4. Len and Amy’s ADA2O1 students travel to the Fleck Dance Theatre to view the Soulful Messiah Production and Lisa Bailey and Meghan Peets’ HHS4M1 students visit the Toronto Reference Library. Susanna Mak will have a TA Christmas excursion to see “A Christmas Carol”. Good luck to the Senior Girls’ Volleyball team and Coaches Artkin and Dever at the Bur Oak invitational tournament. In true Christmas spirit and as part of our advent projects, John Notten’s TA will travel to Our Lady of Lourdes Church to set up and serve a Christmas Dinner to those in need. Thanks to Lee and her students for preparing the meal, and to those TAs that helped raised money to support this worthwhile event. That’s all folks. Have a great week!
