Welcome to Week 15! The arrival of last week’s snow, spectacular Christmas Concerts, and Advent Projects have certainly brought on the Christmas spirit within the halls and resource areas of Mary Ward. We will continue our advent events throughout the week before we say farewell for our well-deserved Christmas vacation.
Thanks to all staff who participated in professional development sessions, or took our students on trips last week: All staff who took the Emergency First Aid/CPR Training, Dave Emer’s Senior Tech excursion to Local 183, Meghan’s Senior PHE trip to the Toronto Climbing Academy, Violet, Christa, Patrick, Pamela, and Ryan’s TLCP in-service, Marissa and Mark Morra’s HRT3M2 final trip to the ROM, Michelle Albert’s MAP4C1 PLN with Holy Spirit, Lisa Bailey and Meghan’s HHS4C1 trip to the Toronto Reference Library, and Len and Amy’s ADA2O1 trip to the Fleck Dance Theatre.
Thanks, also, to the staff that remained behind and covered areas to allow these events to happen.
Appreciation is also extended to Paul Cerre and Lynda Dever for leading the various College and University Application Seminars. Please remind your graduating advisees that Friday, December 18 is the recommended application deadline for colleges and universities.
Kudos to Rick, Maura, Vince, Peter, and their most talented students for two amazing Christmas concerts. These events were so enjoyable and inspiring. The pride on the faces of our students and their parents/guardians and relatives was proof of how much their hard work is valued. Thanks, also, to guest conductor Len Volpe, guest pianist Anne Bolger, as well as Len, Marissa, and their stage crew for ensuring all was in order behind the scenes.
Thanks, also, to Wendy Jones and the ESP team who organized a very exciting volleyball match between our Senior Boys and a joint Ward staff/Toronto Police Services team. Although both teams were extremely talented and closely matched, the Senior Boys narrowly defeated the staff team in a nail-biting 3 sets. Congrats to our School Liaison Officers – Todd and Diana, as well as Violet, Keith, Dana, Patrick McAlpine, Mark Morra, and Ryan for being brave enough to show up!
Congratulations to our Senior Girls’ Volleyball team and Coaches Artkin and Dever for advancing to the semi-finals in the Bur Oak invitational tournament. You can catch the team in action this week as they open their regular season.
By now, I hope you have had an opportunity to read the first issue of our school newspaper, The Planet. The high standards set by previous issues have been upheld with this release. Congratulations to all members of the newspaper especially editor, Diana Vecchiarelli and staff moderators, Marissa Largo, Nicole Powell, and Michelle Albert. It is well worth the read!
Please extend a huge thank you to your TA groups for the efforts they devoted to our Advent Projects over the last 3 weeks. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the monthly virtue of Charity than by joining together on the selected projects to give to those in need. Thanks to Mary Louise and Peter Petrasek for all the hard work they put into introducing, organizing and facilitating all projects. We appreciate all that you do!
You may find a 2010 Calendar and Community Services Directory in your mailboxes courtesy of Mr. Gerry Phillips, M.P.P. for Scarborough-Agincourt. Some extra copies were sent to our school and were distributed to as many staff as possible. A letter from Mr. Phillips is also posted in the mailroom where he thanks all staff for “…the outstanding job that you are doing for the young people who live in this area. You should be proud of your contribution.” In my opinion, he is right on the mark as far as our staff goes – you certainly should be proud!
All teachers may be interested in knowing that the most recent copy of the TCDSB seniority list is now available in the staffroom and with our TSU representative Mike Kennedy. Each copy is organized in two formats: one alphabetically with date of hire, and the other by date of hire. Please take time to review and ensure the information is accurate.
Monday, December 14 is Day 5. Members of the Student Success team will meet in Science at lunch. Three TA groups will depart at lunch to celebrate the Advent season at separate locations. Michelle Albert’s TA will travel to Birkdale Women’s Shelter, Vince Gassi’s TA will gather at StarWalk Buffet, and Dave Simone’s TA will go bowling. Derek is out in the afternoon to interview candidates for teaching positions within the TCDSB.
Our gym will be the place to be after school as our Junior Boys’ Basketball team hosts Crawford Academy. The team, under Coaches Davies, Smith, and Weathers, is on a 5 game winning streak, and hopes to continue their success. You can also catch the Junior and Senior Girls’ Volleyball teams in their double-header opening season match against St. Patrick’s. Junior Coaches Powell and Saran and Senior Coaches Artkin and Dever deserve a good showing to open their season.
Tuesday, December 15 is a C Day following a Day 3 floor schedule and is Unit 7 Target Date. We welcome Fr. Dave to celebrate our Advent liturgies. Please refer to Mary Louise’s memo for scheduling details. Patricia departs for the Secondary Principals’ Meeting after the first mass. There is a large contingent of TA groups who will continue the Advent celebrations for the afternoon: Maureen Collie, Len, and Mary Louise’s TAs are going bowling, Halyna’s TA will lunch at Scarborough Town Centre (STC), Matt’s and Erwin’s TAs will also travel separately to STC for lunch and a movie, Silvia and Nicole’s TAs will lunch together, Mary-Lynn, Rick, Maureen McAndrew, Mark Morra, and Pamela’s TAs will also lunch and watch a movie separately with their advisees, Kara’s TA will gather to celebrate the season, and Mike Kennedy and Michael Waud’s TAs will head to the Science Centre. Safe travels and enjoyable celebrations to all.
Christa and Heather will celebrate Christmas “Canadian-style” with their ESL club after school.
Wednesday, December 16 is Day 6. The Student Council will host a Pep Rally at lunch in the cafetorium to recognize the achievements of all our Fall teams. Bogdan’s TA and Kathy Saran’s TA will gather separately for a Christmas lunch with their advisees. During periods 4 and 5, approximately forty Grade 9 students will write an early Religion exam in the Religion Resource area. Although this area will be closed to all other students, they are welcome to work on their religion units in Room 229. Before heading to our staff Christmas Social, stop by the Den to cheer on the Junior Boys’ Basketball team and Coaches Davies, Smith, and Weathers as they play O’Connor. The staff will gather at Peter Petrasek’s house from 4 – 9 p.m. for our Christmas Party. This will be a good opportunity to acclimatize ourselves for the rest, relaxation, and good times we will have over our two-week break.
Thursday, December 17 is Day 7. Kara and Suzie’s Curlers will participate in their first bonspiel of the season at the Toronto Cricket Club. Good luck!
Friday, December 18 is a C day. All staff are invited to gather in the Family Studies area from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. to enjoy a delicious and nutritious five star gourmet breakfast hosted by the admin team. If we do not live up to your expectations, we will give you a voucher for lieu time that can be cashed in prior to January 4! After breakfast, we will have an extended TA prior to gathering in the cafetorium for our Christmas assembly hosted by Len’s Senior Drama students.
That’s all folks. Have a great final week!
