Welcome to Week 17 and congratulations for making it through the first week back!
We missed a familiar member of our community last week as we learned that Joel Veloso, one of our evening custodians, was transferred to Our Lady of Grace. The schedule at the elementary school works better for Joel and we wish him all the best in his new job. We welcome Ronaldo Gablan to Mary Ward who will be assuming Joel’s duties.
Thanks to all for your assistance in making up for the shortage of supplies during scheduled days. We appreciate your willingness to take on extra duty to ensure that the days ran smoothly for our students.
Please take note of the call for OSSLT Scorers for ten days in April. This is a wonderful professional development opportunity and EQAO will cover the cost of supply teachers. Further information is available by contacting EQAO. Please see the poster on the mailroom door.
Last week ended on a very exciting note thanks to the hard work of Violet, Kara, Mary Louise, and Sandra. All students enrolled in credit recovery celebrated the completion of the program with a luncheon followed by information seminars on time management, organization, and pathway options available through co-op placements. Thanks to Maureen and Eileen for assisting with the afternoon events, and to all credit recovery teachers – Matt Candiotto, Maureen Collie, Mike Kennedy, Jen Wisniowski, Ryan, and Kara – who helped these students achieve success.
All TAs are asked to speak to graduating students who are applying to university, as the final date to apply is January 13.
Ward’s Free the Children leaders will begin their W.U.T. (Warming Up Toronto) Campaign on January 13. This is a warm clothing drive for Toronto’s homeless organized by St. Brigid Church’s “Out of the Cold” program. The campaign will run through Friday, January 22 with collection on Monday, January 25. Thanks to Maureen McAndrew and student leaders Nicole Caguiat, Jan Cruz, and Stephanie Sarmiento for co-ordinating this most worthy activity.
Monday, January 11 is Day 1. Anna Sersanti and her Exercise Science Students will lead a Health and Physical Education Fair during periods 1, 2, and 3 for Grade 10 students. Rumour has it that some former Ward PHE staff will make a special appearance. Anna Luciano will be out at a computer in-service and the Admin. team will meet with the SAC executive during lunch.
Tuesday, January 12 is Day 2 and Unit 8 Target Date. The Academic Alert Cycle begins today. Please refer to Derek’s memo for detailed information. The first of the Grade 10 retreats to Good Shepherd and Scott Mission take place today. If you are interested in attending future retreats, please advise Amy. The Numeracy Committee will meet in the Office Conference Room at lunch. Patricia is out at a K-12 Principals’ Meeting at Blessed Mother Teresa.
Wednesday, January 13 is Day 3 and University Application Deadline. The Swim Team will participate in their first meet of the year at the Etobicoke Olympium. Good luck to all swimmers and Coaches Candiotto, Hayes, and Spearns. Department Heads are asked to meet for our monthly meeting at 2 p.m. in the Library Conference Room. The Safe Schools Action Team will meet in the Office Conference Room at 5:45 p.m.
Thursday, January 14 is Day 4. Violet, Christa, Patrick, Kathy Saran, Pamela, and Ryan will travel to O’Connor for a TLCP In-service. More Grade 10 students will have their retreat at Good Shepherd and Scott Mission. Come cheer on the Varsity Girls Hockey team at Pleasantview Arena as they host St. Joseph’s College. The players and Coaches Dalgarno, Dever, Poole, and Ventura will appreciate the support.
Friday, January 15 is Day 5. We will follow an Extended TA schedule with all Grade 9 students participating in an OASIS Assembly led by Jen Hayes and Dana. The focus of the assembly is on "Sharpening the Saw” (Rejuvenation), Involvement, and Course Selection.
That’s all folks. Enjoy your week!
