Welcome to Week 18! This will be a special week for all of us as we celebrate the birthday of our founder, Mary Ward.
Congratulations to Anna Sersanti and her Exercise Science students for co-ordinating a very successful Health and Physical Education Fair last Monday for our Grade 10 students. We hope this inaugural event will continue for many years to come.
Appreciation is extended to Jen Hayes and Dana for leading Friday’s OASIS assembly. The Grade 9 students are now well-versed in the steps involved in course selection.
Thanks to all staff who participated in professional development sessions, or took our students on trips last week: Arlene, Jason, Amy, Angela Zabana, and Kara for supervising the Grade 10 Retreats; Maureen Collie, Anne Marie, Karen Erle, Sal, Lee, Lucy, and Lisa Weathers for participating in the New Teacher Mentorship Session; and Christa, Violet, Patrick, Kathy Saran, Pamela, and Ryan for participating in the TLCP in-service.
Thanks, also, to the staff that remained behind and covered areas to allow these events to happen.
Congratulations and good luck to Marissa Largo who will be presenting her art work in “Public Realm”, the annual exhibition at the Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts from January 20 – 31. Marissa’s “An Atlas of Scarborough” is a photographic installation of nine images taken in public locations throughout Toronto’s east end. Please plan to attend the Opening Reception on January 21 from 7 – 10 p.m.
Ward’s Free the Children leaders continue their W.U.T. (Warming Up Toronto) Campaign throughout the week with collection on Monday, January 25. Thanks to Maureen McAndrew and student leaders Nicole Caguiat, Jan Cruz, and Stephanie Sarmiento for co-ordinating this most worthy activity.
Our Chaplaincy team is co-ordinating the collection of money to aid ShareLife’s relief efforts for Haiti. Please encourage your students to be generous during this week’s collections, and especially for Civvies Day on Tuesday.
Monday, January 18 is Day 6. Lee and Lisa Bailey will travel to the Toronto Reference Library with the HHS 4M students and Tony, Fred, Keith, Grant, Meghan, Anna Sersanti, Brian Vecchiarelli, and Eileen travel to Snow Valley with the PPL203 students. Violet is out beginning the initial steps for scheduling the 2010-2011 school year, and the girls volleyball teams will be hosting Blessed Mother Teresa in our gym after school. Artkin and Dever’s senior girls play first followed by Harrison, Powell, and Saran’s junior girls. Derek will be out in the afternoon for a VP mentorship event.
Tuesday, January 19 is Day 7 and a Civvies Day. The minimum donation for wearing civvies is $2 with all money going to ShareLife for the Haiti relief efforts. Please ensure all students donate to this worthy cause. We will follow an Extended TA schedule to facilitate WARD #6. This is the first of two civics sessions with information co-ordinated by Jen Hayes and assistance provided by Cathy Schwan. Michael Waud will escort his CLU3M1 students to Henry Carr’s CARR-eers in Justice Fair and Patricia will be out all day for the secondary principal’s meeting at Monsignor Fraser – Norfinch. The CSAC will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the library.
Wednesday, January 20 is Day 8. Academic Alert letters are due by 3 p.m. and TAs are asked to review and verify on Webmarks. Any changes must be reported to subject teachers before 9 a.m. on Friday. Maria Scarano and Pamela will escort a group of Grade 10 students to Good Shepherd and Scott Mission for their retreat. The Friends of Mary Ward will meet in the Office Conference Room at 10 a.m. Before leaving for the day, please stop by the Den to cheer on the girls volleyball teams as they host Francis Libermann. Artkin and Dever’s senior girls play first followed by Harrison, Powell, and Saran’s junior girls.
Thursday, January 21 is Day 9. Winter Activity Day information packages will be distributed today. The EQAO Math test for fast-tracking and deferred Grade 9 students will take place in rooms 302 and 303 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Halyna and Bogdan will facilitate the test. Please refer to Halyna’s January 14 email with an attachment of all students expected to write. Please ensure your advisees report to the correct room. The Student Success team will welcome Carm, Vince Bellissimo, and Catherine Moynihan at 9:30 in the Office Conference Room to discuss plans for our senior ACES/Focus program. Marissa and Nicole Powell will travel to the Toronto Star Newsroom and CBC with the Grade 11 and 12 Journalism and Communication Technology students.
