Welcome Back, Welcome to 2010, Welcome to Week 16!  I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and some quality time with family and friends.  Our return to school coincides with a new virtue for the month of January – Courage.  We are comforted by this month’s quote from Isaiah:

Do not be afraid I am with you.

Our last week prior to holidays was certainly an exciting and fulfilling one that provided many opportunities for us to gather as a community in prayer, laughter, and celebration.  Our thanks to: Mary Louise and Peter for organizing our beautiful Advent Mass with Fr. Dave; the Social Committee for arranging our Staff Christmas Social; Peter Petrasek and family for welcoming us into their lovely home; Paulette and Eileen for helping to organize and set-up for the staff Christmas breakfast and to the numerous staff and student elves that helped with the preparations and clean-up; and to Len, Amy, and the Grade 12 Drama students for all the hard work they put into the Christmas Assembly.  The Jonas Sisters are now on an indefinite hiatus!

A warm welcome back and congratulations to Vince Gassi, who travelled to Chicago for the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic prior to Christmas.  Two of Vince’s pieces, “Legends of The Yucatan” and “Big Raven” were performed at this year’s clinic.  Kudos to Vince, who you can see featured (pre-beard) in the poster below.

Monday, January 4 is Day 8. Please take time during morning TA to welcome back students and remind them of the upcoming scheduled days on Wednesday and Thursday.

Tuesday, January 5 is Day 9.  You can catch our Junior and Senior Girls’ Volleyball teams in action after school as they play Senator O’Connor.  The players and Junior Coaches Powell and Saran, as well as Senior Coaches Artkin and Dever, are always appreciative of your support.

Wednesday, January 6 is a Schedule A Day and Thursday, January 8 is a Schedule B Day.  These dates were strategically positioned by the Calendar Committee last June to provide teachers the opportunity to be proactive in helping students get on track for Unit 8 Target Date on January 12.  This date is especially critical for graduating students because it coincides with post-secondary application deadlines.  Students who have legitimate reasons why they could not submit 8 units must make TAs and subject teachers aware.  If students appear likely to not make the 8 unit check point, subject teachers should send an email to students advising them to see subject teachers immediately to remedy the situation.  If students get this email, they must see their subject teacher immediately.

Please use as many tools and strategies as you can to give students the opportunity to avoid having a Conditional Zero input on January 12.

Friday, January 8 is Day 10.  Mary Ward will be host to ten staff members from Orangeville District Secondary School who are anxious to learn more about our self-directed learning system and student success model.  Please be prepared to answer questions posed by our visitors.

That’s all folks. Enjoy the first school week of 2010!
