Hello All: This is Even Week 20! We are officially at the halfway point in our school year. And for those of you who are counting, there are 7 more weeks until March Break!
As a recap from last week’s activities, this is a reminder that the Unit 8 Checkpoint/Conditional Zero deadline has passed. Where appropriate, please be sure to enter zeros and produce Academic Alert letters. Refer to the memo Santo sent out previously. All Conditional Zeros should be entered into WebMarks by Monday, Jan. 26th. All Academic Alert letters should be entered into WebMarks by 3 p.m. Thurs. Jan. 29th. We will be printing and mailing on Friday, January 30th. Thank you for your assistance with this.
Last week we met at our Faculty Meeting and were to produce an electronic departmental plan for students who are behind so that they can catch up and achieve success. Thank you to those departments who handed their plans in last Friday. If your department has not already sent your plan to Carm, can you please get that done right away? Thanks.
Friday, January 23rd was a great day at Mary Ward. People will be talking about the activities for a while yet. What an incredible job the organizing team did putting together the school-wide assembly to commemorate and celebrate the 424th birthday of Mary Ward as well as the kick off for the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin (IVBM). Mary Louise Ireland and Peter Petrasek put in an enormous amount of work for this assembly and it paid off beautifully. As a community we give thanks to all those people who contributed their efforts in making Friday as wonderful as it was. Thanks to the Drama students and staff for their dramatic representation of Mary Ward’s life. Thank you to the Spoken Word performers and Wendy Jones who helped oversee their work. Thank you to Cathy Schwan for her accompaniment with the power point presentation. Thank you to all teachers and students who served as human bowling pins. Thank you to Peter Hathway and the Tech Crew who help the assembly come off flawlessly. And thank you to the entire Birthday Committee – seen and unseen whose hand in this beautiful community builder was felt. How blessed we are!
In the same celebration vein, Friday’s Semi Formal dinner/dance was a tremendous success. Over 400 students attended the evening at Paradise Banquet Hall. Student Council and Sandra Pezzetta put in a great deal of work. The students looked elegant and the banquet hall was beautifully decorated. A great time was had by all. Thanks to Sandra, Joanna Morra, Michelle Albert, Mary Lynn Arturi, Nicole Powell, Marissa Largo, Chris Luck, and appearances by Adrian Parlato and Mike Kennedy. For those who were not able to attend, you missed another Santo Visconti dance presentation!
Speaking of Santo Visconti, as you know, Santo was off last week for Jury Duty. At the 11th hour he was selected for a second degree murder trial which is scheduled to last for 5 – 6 weeks. We were all hoping Santo would be able to slide by undetected. In Santo’s absence, Ken Predovich will return for Monday and Tuesday. We will probably make different arrangements due to the length of Santo’s absence. Carm and I will be busy making plans and we will be sure to let you know what is going on as soon as we figure something out. In the meantime, good luck to Santo and we ask your patience. Thanks.
And now for this week…… Our Kids Our Future is running a Book Fair all week. They are looking for new or very gently used books. Book collection will take place every morning in TA. Please stay tuned for more details.
The Grade 9 Religion final exam will take place during period 4 and 5 in the cafeteria on Monday. Please remind your advisees writing the exam that they must have registered ahead of time and returned all units and materials to the Religion Resource Room in the morning. Please ask all your advisees to leave their knapsacks and purses behind. Students only need to bring their exam registration form and writing utensils. Good luck to the exam writers and Religion staff.
For those of you who are interested, the CSAC will be meeting Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Library.
On Wednesday the 28th, some members of our Student Success Team will be attending a Differentiated Learning in-service with our elementary learning network partners. If you are attending the in-service, please be sure to let your department heads know. We will be receiving supply teachers but we would ask that Departments consider how the Student Success Credit Rescue kids will be covered? Having a supply teacher in Student Success will not be to anyone’s advantage.
Friday will be a busy day for the Business Department. It is their annual Business Day conference. Students will be attending keynote addresses and will be involved in attending or making presentations throughout the day. Good luck to the Business Department. We hope your day is a success.
Friday will also be the early writing date for the Mathematics EQAO exam. Generally this day is targeted specifically for those grade 9’s who have been fast tracking their math course. More than likely your grade 9’s will know whether they will be writing on this day or not.
Friday is the Unit 9 Target Day as well as being the first target date for mark submissions for Mary Ward students applying to university. All units must be handed in and all tests must be written. Good luck to that group of students.
Finally, we wish all the best to Sal Valvo who will be ending his assigned occasional placement on Friday. Sal jumped into the Mary Ward waters and has managed beautifully. He has embraced the Mary Ward way and has been an active participant in the community including coaching of the Junior Boys Basketball team. We will miss Sal and wish him all the best. We will be welcoming back Jennifer Hayes to the English Department on Monday. Jen has been off on maternity leave with Georgia and we are looking forward to her return.
That’s it for now. Have a great week. |
