Welcome to Week 13 and a historic end to the month of November – the first November on record with no snowfall!  As we enter December, we honour the virtue of Charity:

Where there is charity and love, God is there!

We bade farewell to Marie Cornacchia on Friday, who was a big help in the main office for the past few weeks.  We welcome Angela Cardinale back with open arms.  We missed you and are happy to have you back with us.

We also said goodbye to Al Castrucci who has been with us since last spring helping the custodians.  With Al’s leaving, Anthony Lu will be extra busy in the mornings since he is now on his own until 10 a.m. when Ross Romanino arrives.  Please be mindful of this situation.

Thanks to all staff who participated in professional development sessions, or took our students on trips last week: Lynn Hayes’ computer in-service, Derek, Wendy Jones, and Anna Sersanti a at the Bill 157 in-service, Dana’s OASIS leader training, Anne Marie, Sal, Christa, Patrick, Mark Morra, Kathy Saran, Pamela, and Lisa Weathers in the new staff lunch and learn, and Mary-Lynn, Mary Louise, Lee, and Jen Wisniowski’s participation in our Board’s Mental Health Symposium.

Thanks, also, to the staff that remained behind and covered areas to allow these events to happen.

Kudos and appreciation are extended to Len Dalton, Peter Hathway, Mary Louise, and Peter Petrasek for all the work they did to prepare our school community for the Advent season.  The Advent Liturgy of the Word and Advent Project presentation, along with the follow-up TA discussion and activities, effectively united us as a community and helped focus on what we can do to help those in need.  I cannot think of a better message to keep in mind as we prepare for the Christmas season.

Our Honour Roll Breakfast was an enjoyable celebration of all those students who achieved high academic success last year.  Thanks to Violet and Paulette for all the work they did in preparing for the event and to Len and Eileen for assisting with set-up and clean-up.  Thanks also to Sabina and Esther and the student helpers who provided some delicious snacks for the breakfast.

Thanks to all teachers for co-operating with the report card cycle, ensuring deadlines were adhered to.  Our appreciation is also extended to the secretarial staff who worked diligently printing, verifying, and collating the reports.  Your hard work is most appreciated and has not gone unnoticed.

Thanks to Nicole for working hard to solicit articles and for preparing the “Happenings” newsletter.  “Happenings” goes home with all report cards and is also shared with our community partners.  Please do your best to write short articles of school events in which you are involved.  You can forward these articles to Nicole at anytime and she will insert them in future “Happenings”.  If we get in the habit of writing summaries after the event occurs, Nicole’s job will be much easier.

Derek, Violet, and I enjoyed meeting with student representatives from most TA groups on Friday.  Please ensure your representative summarizes the highlights from the meeting during Wednesday’s Extended TA.  Thanks to Maureen Collie for allowing us the use of the library and for setting-up and taking attendance.  Her help in accommodating our continuous requests is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to the Junior and Senior Girls’ Volleyball teams for their strong showing at the Sir John A MacDonald tournament last Friday.  Both teams did extremely well in pool play allowing them to advance to the playoff round, narrowly being defeated in the semi-final round.  Junior captain, Rachael Chafe was one of three tournament MVPs selected by the officials for skill and fair play.  Congratulations also to Junior Coaches Powell and Saran and Senior Coaches, Artkin and Dever for the work they put into preparing the athletes.

All winter coaches are reminded to give copies of their schedules to Derek for input in the school calendar so we can attempt to attend home games.

Our Debating Team performed well in their first tournament at Brebeuf on Saturday.  Coach Waud and the eight student debaters gained experience and confidence for future tournaments.  Thanks to Maureen McAndrew for giving of her time to judge the debates.

The Mary Ward Design Department is happy to announce the 6th Annual Christmas Jewellery Sale.  Students welcome shoppers Monday through Wednesday at lunch and after school until 4 p.m. in the front foyer.  All proceeds will go towards The Memory Project, helping children in orphanages in Peru, Thailand, and Uganda.  Please take time to visit the “Ag” booth to see their beautiful pieces of sterling silver, bronze, copper, and glass.

Monday, November 30 is Day 6 and Unit 6 Target Date Paul Titus will take three students to the Tennis finals at York University’s Rexall Centre.  Good luck to all!

Guelph University will present at 9 a.m. and report cards will be distributed during end of day TA check-in.  We will call students back to TA ten minutes earlier to facilitate distribution.  Please remind your advisees of the importance of sharing their reports with their parents so they can prepare for interviews.

Tuesday, December 1 is Day 7Tony D’Agostino, Marion, and Anna Sersanti will escort our Senior PHE and Science students to view Body Works at the Science Centre.

Derek will be out all day participating in new vice-principals’ Issues Series and Patricia will be out in the afternoon for new principals’ Succession Series.  Both sessions will be held at Madonna.

Before leaving for the day, stop by the gym to cheer on our Junior Boys Basketball team as they play against Liberman.  The team and Coaches Davies, Smith, and Weathers will appreciate your support.

Wednesday, December 2 is Day 8.  We will follow an Extended TA Schedule to facilitate the Grade 9 OASIS Assembly and follow-up from the Town Hall Meeting. Jen Hayes and Dana will lead our Grade 9 students on how to read their report cards.

Violet and members of the Student Success Team will participate in an all day workshop.

Patricia is out in the afternoon at a facilities meeting at the CEC.

SAC will host the first Movie Night of the year featuring Disney’s UP.

Thursday, December 3 is Day 9.  We will follow the Modified Schedule below to facilitate an early dismissal allowing all to prepare for Parent-Teacher Interviews that will run from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the gym.
