Welcome to Week 10!  We certainly were blessed with beautiful weekend weather and I hope everyone took time to soak in the warmth and sun that may have to do us for a while.

This week we take time to honour those who served our country in past wars and those who continue to serve today.  We also pray for the day when our efforts for peace will prevail.

Our warmest congratulations to Anna Luciano on the birth of her second grandchild, Claudia.  We are happy to report that all are doing well and they will be in good hands as Anna will be off this week performing her grandmother duties.  We wish you well.

Congratulations to Nicole Powell who was selected as one of eight members of the TCDSB who will be responsible for revising the Arts curriculum.  Nicole will participate in a Ministry of Education Conference Monday and Tuesday working with the team preparing for this process.

Mary Louise Ireland was selected to be part of the planning committee for the TCDSB’s Mental Health Symposium scheduled for November 27.  Mary Louise will share experiences from our Stop the Stigma program that she and Lynda Dever piloted with Mary Ward students last year.  Congratulations, Mary Louise, and thank you for giving of your time for this worthwhile event.

Thanks to Mary Louise and Peter for organizing Monday’s visit from Sr. Jane McDonnell and Sr. Mary Elizabeth.  Sr. Mary Elizabeth’s presentation on her work in Peru was informative and well-received by the students who attended the presentation.

The Take Our Kids To High School day was an exciting event for the Grade 8 students from our associate schools.  Thanks to Peter, Mary Louise, and our student leaders for helping to promote our school and for providing a good experience for our future students.

Thursday’s Lockdown Drill was a good review of the steps we must take in the case of an emergency within the school.  Thanks to Derek for organizing the drill, and to Antonella, Wendy Jones, and Liz for assisting in touring the school to ensure all procedures were properly followed.  Please remember to follow the steps outlined in Derek’s handout and ensure doors are locked, lights are off, and all are quiet in the area.

Thanks to all teachers, Instructional Assistants, and Educational Assistants involved in Friday’s Carry-Over Exams.  The exams ran smoothly thanks to your time and efforts.  Thanks also to Derek for all the work put into organizing the day.

Our appreciation is also extended to all staff for giving of their time to participate in Friday’s staff meeting and mass.  Thanks to Mary Louise and Peter for organizing the mass with Fr. Gerry Tannon and to all who participated in the choir.  It certainly made for an enjoyable gathering.

Thanks to all staff who participated in professional development sessions and those who took our students on trips last week: Pierre Cuschieri’s First Aid training; Marion’s TPJ3M/4M trip to Sunnybrook and Sylvia’s AWD4M trip to the Nanopod Studio.

Thanks, also, to the staff that remained behind and covered areas to allow these events to happen.

We are happy to welcome back Mary-Lynn, Marissa, John Notten, and the senior art students who spent the last 10 days touring Italy.  They were missed by all, and we are anxious to hear all about their trip.

We also welcome back Marie Ventura and Joanna Morra who escorted the DECA students to Buffalo over the weekend to participate in the NARCON leadership conference.  We hope it was informative, enjoyable, and educational.

Best wishes and a safe trip to Michelle Albert, Sandra, and the SAC members who travel to Niagara Falls on Sunday to participate in the 3 day Student Leadership Conference.  The group will be presenting a $1500 cheque to Free the Children on behalf of the Mary Ward Community.  Please express our gratitude to all your advisees for their generosity to this most worthwhile cause.

In our ongoing efforts to promote student success, please remind all your advisees of the French tutoring sessions led by our Senior Extended French Students at lunch on Tuesday and Thursdays and after school on even week Wednesdays led by our French teachers.

Bogdan and Kara have also worked hard collaborating with other departments to gain extra time for students enrolled in MFM1P1 to meet four days in a 10 day cycle.  Please encourage your advisees enrolled in MFM1P1 to attend the following sessions in order to increase their opportunity to be successful:
