Welcome to Week 7!  This was a great weekend to enjoy the autumn colours; I hope you had an opportunity to do so.

Thanks to all staff who took our students on trips last week.  Nicole Powell’s AWQ trip; Susanna Mak and her team of Chan, Davies, Hall, Hayes, Holmes, McAlpine, Valentini, and Weathers who escorted all grades of English students to various Stratford plays; Lee’s Gr. 12 HFA and HNC trips; Wendy Jones and P.C. Hussain for allowing our students to be represented at the ESP kickoff; Matt Candiotto’s Gr. 11 trip to ROM and Zidar, Jones and Schwan’s Gr. 9 Geography trip to Niagara Falls.

Thanks, also, to the staff that remained behind and covered areas to allow these excursions to happen.

Our Grade 9 Girls and Boys Flag Football teams and the Tennis Team wrapped up their seasons last week.  Thanks to Karen Heisz, Anna Sersanti, Marie Ventura, and Dave Simone for giving of your time and lending your expertise to these sports.

Congratulations to the Girls Field Hockey team who had a big game on Friday.  Their tying game against O’Connor gained them a spot in the quarter finals.  Good luck to coaches MacIsaac, Peets, and Saran, and their enthusiastic group as they enter the playoff round.

Raise the Roof was a huge success and a lot of fun.  Just under 500 tickets were sold raising over $4000 for the Philippines Flood Relief efforts.  Staff leader Marissa, student leaders Dawn Ang, Beatrice DeVera, Mariah Llanes, and Naomi Reyes, and numerous staff and student volunteers enabled this event to be organized in less than two weeks.  Highlights of the event will be shown on Rogers Cable (date to follow).  Who knew Mark Morra sings, and sings well!?!

Our superintendent, Anthony Petitti, was recognized by the Ontario Physical Health and Education Association (OPHEA) with an Award of Distinction.  Tony’s work in developing the Healthy Action Teams and Professional Learning Networks within the TCDSB demonstrates his commitment to the advancement of active, healthy living opportunities for children and youth.  Congratulations Tony!

Lucy Valentini’s language club has been well-received by staff and students.  Classes will run after school from 3:15 – 4:15 beginning October 20 and ending November 24, with a new session beginning in the new year.  Tuesdays will focus on Italian with Lucy in Rm. 306 and Spanish with Tawnee and Vida in Rm. 305.  Darlene will teach Latin on Wednesdays in the Family Studies room.  Thanks to all for becoming involved in this unique opportunity.  Please share this information with your advisees.

This week is Waste Reduction Week, and GreenQuest will be hosting two Litterless Lunch days with prizes to be won.  Please ensure your advisees are aware of these events.

The TA Review Meetings should be completed this week.  If you have not arranged a date and time for your meeting, please do so asap.

Monday, October 19 is Unit 3 Target Date.  Please continue to remind students of the importance of keeping on track with units.

Please also ensure your advisees who did not have their pictures taken last month that they must get them taken today as the photographers are returning for Photo Re-takes at 1 pm in the cafetorium.

Pierre’s 4U Physics students will travel to Waterloo to visit the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

Our Senior Boys Volleyball team is having a great season and will host O’Connor in the Wolverine Den.  Good luck to all players and coaches Emer, Harrison, and Wong.

We will honour our top academic students from 2008-09 at Academic Awards Night beginning at 7 p.m.   Thanks to Yvette for all the work she had put into organizing this event.

Tuesday, October 20 will see two presentations offered for our senior students.  The Ontario Civil Construction Institute will present at 9 a.m. and Western’s King’s College will present at 2 p.m.

Patricia will be out all day at a Secondary School Principals’ Meeting.

Our second CSAC meeting occurs at 7:30 p.m.  Thanks to Karen Heisz for agreeing to be our staff representative.

Wednesday, October 21 is the day Violet, Susanna, Rosalinda, and Mike depart for Vancouver to participate in the CCSDL Conference.  We wish them a safe trip, an informative conference, and an enjoyable time out west.  Mary Louise and Peter Petrasek will be travelling to Cedar Glen for the first of two Gr. 12 overnight retreats and Sylvia will take her Gr. 12 AWD students on their Design Trip.

At 2 p.m., McMaster will present in the cafetorium.

Our Girls Basketball Teams host Cardinal Newman for a double header in the gym beginning at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 22.  Good luck to the girls and junior coaches McAlpine and Weathers and senior coaches Dever and Rossi.  We will make sure that Derek cheers for the right team.  Violet will be cheering the Wolverines from Vancouver.

Friday, October 23 is a busy day for excursions.  Matt will be going to the ROM with the Gr. 11 Religion students, and Kara and team will be travelling to Niagara Falls with all the Gr. 9s who did not participate in last week’s trip.  Joanna Morra will escort DECA students to Hamilton for a tournament and Sylvia, Vida, and Kathy Saran will travel to the Toronto Convention Centre for an Art Fair with the Gr. 11 Art studentsJohn Notten and Patricia will be involved with the Gr. 10 art students who will be participating in John’s version of the Amazing Race in downtown Toronto.

Finally, the Toronto Emergency Medical Services will be presenting at 11 a.m. on careers in this area of study.

Good luck to the Cross Country team and coaches Dalgarno, Poole, and Hayes as they compete in the Boardwalk Relays.

Sele Akioyamen and retired Superintendent Mary-Eileen Donovan will be recognized at the Catholic Education Foundation of Ontario’s annual Patrick Fogarty Dinner on October 24.  Congratulations, once again, to these most deserving recipients.

That’s all folks – have a great week!
