O Canada!  How can you measure a Maple Leaf?

Autumn is the perfect season to explore the mathematical aspects of leaves.  Prior to beginning this investigation have the students bring in a selection of maple leaves they have found on the ground..
Divide the class into cooperative groups of four students.  Ask them to brainstorm how they might measure a maple leaf and record all of the different methods/ideas on chart paper.  Have each group contribute their thoughts in a large group discussion. Some suggestions you might receive are: measure the perimeter or area, use grid paper to find the area, use string to find the perimeter, weigh the leaf, look for lines of symmetry, look for rotational symmetry, measure the interior and exterior angles, etc.

Following the discussion allow the groups to begin their exploration.  Provide them with chart paper and markers.  Inform them that they will be presenting their findings to the whole class during the next math period.  As the groups present their findings allow the students to ask questions and look at each other's organization of ideas.  Post the chart paper in the classroom or hallway.
