The Student Trustees for the coming school year at the Toronto Catholic District School Board were sworn in at April's board meeting.
William Lawrence, a Grade 11 student at Bishop Allen Academy, and Enrique Olivo, in Grade 11 at Neil McNeil High School, will take over from outgoing Student Trustee Andrew Walker. The twosome is already a team, having bonded through the Board’s Catholic Student Leadership Impact Team and their mutual interest in business.
Their official one-year term as Student Trustees begins on August 1, following the transition period from March until July 31.
William has embraced student governance at his school and enjoys public speaking. A young entrepreneur, he has started a tech company in partnership with his brother that has a social approach to education and career choices.
“I feel I have the potential to continue to motivate students,” says William. “My goal is to give back to the community that helped me.”
Enrique has demonstrated leadership in his school’s Chaplaincy Group, which provides support to its members in developing their faith, and putting that faith into action through retreats for elementary students. “I want to bring a focus on the true meaning of our Catholic faith,” says Enrique. “To me, faith is not just about prayer…it’s about the presence of God in our everyday lives.”
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank Andrew Walker for his dedication,” says Board Chair Ann Andrachuk. “We have great respect for the role of Student Trustee as we work together to improve student achievement and well-being.”
William and Enrique credit outgoing Student Trustee Andrew Walker with achieving a great deal under his leadership, advocating for change through awareness and action. They are overwhelmed by the passion and energy of TCDSB students and their widespread leadership capabilities.
Outgoing Student Trustee Andrew Walker feels he is leaving the job in good hands. “It has been a terrific leadership opportunity and an honour to serve my fellow students in the TCDSB. “William and Enrique are a strong team and they will carry on our tradition of transforming the world through faith, innovation and action.”
