DESCRIPTION OF STUDIES
Language:
• The Balanced Literacy approach begun in the primary grades continues
with the introduction of the workshop format for reading and
writing instruction.
• Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop occur for 45 minutes daily.
• In Grade 4, the focus shifts from learning to read to reading
to learn. Students will be expected to express their ideas confidently
in writing.
• The students are provided with daily time for both reading and
writing. Instruction will recognize their individual strengths
and needs.
Math:
• Studies in 5 strands
o Number Sense and Numeration
o Measurement
o Geometry and Spatial Sense
o Patterning and Algebra
o Data Management and Probability
• A new textbook/series will be introduced throughout the board
during the first term. Science:
• Studies in 5 strands
o Life Systems – Habitats and Communities
o Matter and Materials – Materials That Transmit, Reflect,
or Absorb Light or Sound
o Energy and Control – Light and Sound Energy
o Structures and Mechanisms – Pulleys and Gears
o Earth and Space Systems – Rocks, Minerals, and Erosion

Religion/Family Life:
