Welcome
to Junior Kindergarten
Children’s
early learning experiences have a profound effect on their
development. In Kindergarten, children acquire a variety
of important skills, knowledge and attitudes. The learning
they
do in Kindergarten provides a foundation for the acquisition
of literacy, numberical, social and other skills.
When working with you child remember to:
• Set a good example for your child. Children learn considerable
from what we do and say.
• Spend lots to time talking to your child. It impacts on many
areas of his/her development.
• Work with your child as an individual. Each child has his/her
own strengths and weaknesses and develops at his/her own pace.
• Surround your child with situations in which he/she will be successful.
•
Accept your child’s efforts without criticism. Always encourage
and praise his/her efforts.
Teach your child the steps of good listening with verbal reminders
or cues. Some of the steps to promote good listening include:
• Look at the person who is talking.
• Be quiet
• Listen carefully.
• Think about what is being said.
•
Ask about anything you don’t understand.
Teach your child the steps to follow when talking to or responding
to others. These include:
• Look at the person (or people) you are talking to.
• Speak clearly.
• Use a suitable voice for the distance.
• Remember not to speak too fast.
Encourage you child to gradually become more independent in
dressing by learning how to:
• Put on socks
• Pull up pants
• Insert a belt in the loops of pants.
• Put on shoes
• Tie shoe laces
• Put on a jacket or coat.
• Button or zip up clothes.
