Welcome to Senior Kindergarten!

The Kindergarten Program contains expectations for all five areas of learning in Kindergarten. These five areas are:
• Language
• Mathematics
• Science and Technology
• Personal and Social Development
• The Arts

Children’s early learning experiences have a profound effect on their development. In Kindergarten, children’s receptivity to new influences and capacity to learn are at their peak. During this period, they acquire a variety of important skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will affect their ability to learn, their personal development, their relationships with others and their future participation in society.

Philosophy of Program
The kindergarten program is planned to provide for the needs of the five year old. Language development and social skills are worked on daily. The program is activity-based and child-centered because children learn naturally through play.

The various centers provided in the classroom help develop:
• Imagination
• Co-ordination
• Language skills
• Listening
• Dramatic play
• Concentration
• Co-operation
• Thinking (problem solving)
• Story making
• Social skills

Kindergarten is a time of discovery, exploration and growth. I want to work with you to install a love of learning in your children and make the program a happy and enriching one for them.

Physical Education
Movement is a means of growth and a reflection of that process. It would therefore seem advisable for young children to have frequent periods of guided physical activity. These periods will usually be taken outdoors if the weather is suitable. The gymnasium will be used for scheduled physical education classes also. This practice gives the children opportunities to work in a larger area than the Kindergarten room and to make use of the equipment provided such as climbing apparatus, benches, and agility boxes.

Activity Time
Activity time is a very important part of the daily program. It is a highly individualized experience which allows for much self-initiated, selected, directed and evaluated activity. Here each child learns about the qualities of materials and the use of tools. In handling materials and equipment, sensory skill and muscular control is developed.
