TCDSB Parenting/Family Literacy Centres 2007-2008

Parenting and Family Literacy Centres are school based programs  where parents/caregivers and children, birth to six years of age, participate in play-based activities that focus on the development of early  literacy and numeracy skills. Key program goals include:

• Fostering positive parent-child interactions and optimal child development

• Offering a family literacy program that develops early literacy and numeracy skills

• Increasing parent’s knowledge, involvement and comfort with schools

• Helping with transition to school

• Early identification of children with special needs

Program Components:

Family Literacy: Children and parents/caregivers are provided with opportunities to read together promoting literacy and oral language development.
 

Learning Through Play: Children and parents/caregivers play together at a wide-range of learning centres that promote the development of the whole child.
 

Family Story and Music Time: Children and parents/caregivers gather together to sing songs, chant rhymes, listen to and share stories and much more.

Gym Time & Outdoor Play: Children and parents/caregivers are invited to participate in active play (either outside or in the school gymnasium) encouraging the development of large and small muscle growth and coordination. 

Snack Time: Children sit together and enjoy a healthy snack.

Lending Library: Parents/caregivers have the opportunity to borrow books on child development and parenting issues. Multilingual children books are also  available for loan.

Community Information & Resources: Parents/caregivers have access to information about community services and resources.  Families are linked to appropriate resources as required.
