Frequently asked questions about registration—Catholic Elementary SchoolsWho can register at TCDSB elementary school?
What documents do I need?
If your status is other than Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or permanent resident, please contact the TCDSB Admissions Department at 416-222-8282, extension 5320. Can I send photocopies of the documents? Please provide original documents where possible to the school at the time of registration. School will make copies and return the originals to parents. When can I register? Registration begins February 1st and continues throughout the year. Schools make their own local arrangements for open houses, tours and registration hours. Please contact the Catholic school nearest you for specific information, or visit the website for open house information. Which school do I have to send my child to? We always encourage parents to register their children at their neighbourhood Catholic school. If, however, parents wish to send their children to another school, they are free to do so as long as there is space available in that school, and as long as the parent assumes responsibility for transporting the child to that location. Is daycare offered in TCDSB schools? Many TCDSB schools provide full daycare programs. Others offer before- and after-school programs on site. To obtain more information about these programs, or off-site programs that service our TCDSB schools, please call your neighbourhood Catholic school, or contact either Marilyn Rodrigues-Wright at extension 2475 or Everton Lewis at extension 2688. How old does child have to be for kindergarten
Is JK mandatory? Although it is not mandatory, if a parent chooses not to send their child to junior kindergarten, they will still be placed in senior kindergarten the following September in order to keep children with their same aged peers. Do you have all –day kindergartens? Yes, there are 7 sites that offer full day SK programs: Blessed Margherita, St. Augustine, St. Boniface, St. Dorothy, St. Luigi, St. Teresa, St. Thomas More. There are no firm plans at the moment to expand the program. The full-day programs operate five days a week. On what day does my child start school? School for SK students begins on the first day of school (the day after Labour Day). Although JK children begin school as soon as possible, it has been the Board’s practice to stagger the entry of JK students to allow for adjustment to the formal class setting. Your child’s JK teacher will contact you to make arrangements for the first day of class for your child. What time do classes begin? The start times vary from school to school. The earliest schools begin at 8:30 a.m. and the latest ones start at 9:00 a.m. The program is a two-and-a-half hour program. Your local school will provide specific information. Do I get my choice of mornings or afternoons? If schools have more than one kindergarten class, then generally parents are encouraged to indicate their preference for morning or afternoon sessions. The school will try to accommodate these requests as far as possible. Is there school bus transportation provided? Your neighbourhood Catholic school can provide information about availability of busing and bus routes. Our Transportation Department at 229-5313 can also confirm the availability of transportation. Please note that transportation can only be provided to what is considered the neighbourhood Catholic school. Our transportation policy is available on our website at http://www.tcdsb.org/policyregister/ST01.html. French Immersion and Extended French There are five schools offering the French Immersion program beginning in Senior Kindergarten: Our Lady of Peace, St. Cecilia, St. Cyril, St. Agatha and Our Lady of Wisdom. The Extended French program (beginning in grade 5) is available in 20 schools across the City. For further information, please call our FSL Department at 416-222-8282, extension 2540. Direction of school support At the time of registration, parents will be provided with a form to ensure they are correctly identified as Catholic school supporters. For information about Direction of School Support, please contact Sandra Vitale at 416-222-8282, extension 2666.
