History & Tradition

The history of All Saints Catholic School and the church are closely linked. The school opened in the fall of 1962, and the parish had its first mass in the school yard on June 21, 1964. It would be three more years until the church was completed under the direction of Father Martin O'Grady, with the first mass being celebrated on the feast of all saints day, November 1, 1967. The tradition of this feast day continues to be an event of special celebration for both the church and the school community.

The school was small when it first opened, but grew quickly to an enrolment of more than 600 students. Over the years, three other Catholic schools were built in the area, and as a result, the current population has declined slightly, but continues to reflect a cultural mix of more than 21 nationalities.

The school crest embodies icons representing prayer life, learning and knowledge, athletic achievement, and the motto “love and growth”. All Saints is a caring school and community environment which stresses tolerance and acceptance of others, commitment to our Catholic faith and high academic standards.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

All Saints School is committed to Catholic education as outlined in the Mission Statement of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Our students come to us with a variety of strengths and needs, with our Catholic faith as our common bond. Our prayer life, liturgical celebrations, the sacraments, and our faith and values system form the foundation of our program.

Our school policy encompasses routines and procedures which ensure a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students. The code of behaviour emphasizes mutual respect, conflict resolution and self-discipline. The safe arrival program encourages constant home to school communication when a student is absent or late.

Our instructional programs are continually being adapted to meet the individual needs of our students. Students who experience difficulty with regular classroom work are discussed in our school-based support network, and instruction is modified as needed. If necessary, we can call upon the support of the joint team, which includes TCDSB staff such as a social worker, psychometrician, assessment and programming teacher, and other specialized personnel. Parents are always invited to participate in the review process, and are kept apprised of modifications and progress.

There are a number of special programs at, or associated with, All Saints School. French immersion is offered to students in grades 5 through 8, and a number of pupils from these same grade levels attend gifted program classes at Transfiguration Catholic School. Vocal music is provided for all classes, and an instrumental strings program is available for grades 6 through 8. English as a second language instruction is designed to assist grade 3 to 8 students adjust to the English curriculum. The intermediate division is involved with the Learning Partnership program, interacting with several business organizations, and culminating in the inventor-mentor convention in the spring. The computer club is very well attended by primary, junior and intermediate pupils.

All Saints has always had a strong extra-curricular program which includes concerts, choirs, W5H, science and technology fairs, young authors festival, environmental awareness activities, math and chess club, student council, gymnastics club, and many intramural and intermural athletic competitions, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross-country and track and field.
