Alternative Education Program
Age 16-18
This program provides a flexible and individualized alternative setting for youth 16 years of age and older who are at risk and are experiencing halted success with the regular secondary school system. Students who wish to attend this school must have achieved their grade 9 credits (8 credits). Students can obtain: academic high school credits in order to obtain OSSD requirements, practical life skills training, upgrading and preparation for re-entry to school.

Potential students must be referred by their secondary school and complete an academic assessment to determine appropriate programming.

18-21 Program
Age 18-21
This program was developed for youth between the ages of 18 and 21 who are facing barriers that are preventing them from attending regular school or maintaining employment. Students can obtain: academic high school credits in order to obtain OSSD requirements, practical life skills training, upgrading and preparation for re-entry to school.

Special Placement and Alternative Curriculum for Excused Students

Grades 9-12
SPACES

Spaces is an alternative short term program for students suspended or excused from their local TCDSB secondary school. The program is for high risk adolescents who have been suspended, victimized or who have fallen seriously behind academically due to chronic neglect of school work, negative behaviours, ongoing absenteeism or personal circumstances. Each placement lasts anywhere from 5 to 20 days.

Supervised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils
SALEP

This program serves students under the age of 16 who have demonstrated an inability to cope in the regular program at their home school. The referral to SALEP must be completed by the school social worker. The program allows the students to work part-time or full-time while attending school two and a half days per week in order to also earn credits. Students can stay in the SALEP program until they turn 16, at which time they can choose to return to school or enter the work force.

This program offers students in need of intensive intervention, a temporary differentiated setting. The classrooms are always connected to an outside agency or institution such as adolescent and family centres, hospitals etc. Consideration of where students reside can affect placement.
