History & Tradition

Our school is dedicated to the Canadian Martyrs.  These missionaries came to a new land to spread the faith in the native villages.  The Canadian Martyrs gave up their lives, in their attempt to help the indigenous people hear and believe the teachings of Jesus Christ.  We are fortunate to be located adjacent to Canadian Martyrs Church and close the  Canadian Martyrs Shrine in Midland, Ontario.

As well as having a close connection to the history of Canada, we have a long history in the East York community.   Canadian Martyrs Catholic School celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the school in 2002 with a liturgy, family party and community pilgrimage to Canadian Martyrs Shrine.  A number of the parents and grandparents of students currently enrolled, also attended Canadian Martyrs Catholic School.  They share fond memories of their First Communion and Confirmation celebrations as well as many stories about school days at CMCS.

How We Meet the Diversified Needs of Our Students

Over the years, the school has been extended to include a gymnasium, elevator, library and 6 additional classrooms as well as the original traditional square school design.  We service children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 by providing a well-rounded blend of academics as well as co-curricular activities.  We participate in the sports competitions offered within the Board, in-house leagues for soccer and basketball, Chess Club, W5H, History Fair, etc .Our students do very well and are encouraged by the high standards of the school, the dedicated staff and the small school friendly environment.   Monthly awards assemblies are held to recognize special achievements, students of the month, honour roll students and to share ideas and talents.   In addition to our regular classes, we offer a specialized Learning Disability class and a Behavioural class for our students with special needs.  We offer pull-out English as a Second Language, Special Educations and Early Literacy programs for our children.
