Christ the King Catholic
School had its beginning in 1947 with three classes in the Church basement and one class
in the Church itself. In 1948, the school moved into the brand new building located
directly behind the Church on Lakeshore Boulevard West in beautiful downtown Long Branch.
The school was moved into Franklin Horner Middle School (432 Horner Avenue) which had been declared surplus by the Etobicoke Board of Education so that the site could through intensive repairs. In September 1997, the school was moved back to its current location. The immediate advantage occuring from the move was the close proximity to the Church. This resulted in a closer relationship with the pastor and a familiarity with the Church that did not exist before.
A Catholic environment
Code of behaviour
School rules are endorsed by our Catholic School Advisory Council and enforced by all staff members. The central goal is to teach respect for other people and their property. We are proud of our well-behaved children and feel that our clearly stated rules are very important in achieving this goal.
School Action Plans
Results from the 1999 EQAO grade 3 and 6 assessments of reading, writing and mathematics show that the scores of the students at Christ the King surpassed the Boards overall averages. With the exception of Reading in the grade 6 assessments, which was lower by 2% as compared to the provincial average, our grade 3 and 6 students scores also surpassed the average of all the students in the province of Ontario.
We are in the first phase of the Boards initiative of Balanced Literacy for students from junior kindergarten to grade 3. Teachers attend Board sponsored workshops. The timetable was organized to allow for exchange of information with our Board personnel during school hours. Teachers suggest that parents be involved in their childs reading by encouraging parents to purchase books through book clubs and periodically sending books home with their students. The Board has supplied junior kindergarten to grade 3 students and teachers with numerous reading resources. All teachers in the primary division have begun to use a word wall.
School-Based Support meetings stress program modification for students at risk. The use of reading buddies with older and younger students is greatly encouraged. On going communication between school and home is continually stressed. The ESL teacher is working for a short time basis, with a small group of students who are at risk from grade 1 and 2.
The percentage of boys enjoying reading from grade 3 to grade 6 has had a significant decline. To see a change in this area, in addition to the new class set of novels that have been purchased, the staff will be investigating the purchase of new reading materials to support a literature-based program in the junior division.
All staff have implemented the new mathematics series "Interactions". Teachers attended Board sponsored workshops such as "Math Time" for JK/SK. The mathematics manipulatives have been centralized for easier access by all staff so that whole class activities could be conducted. Math videos have also been incorporated into all of the mathematics programs.

Making A Difference In The Lives of Children in
Third World Countries
Students in Mr. Cinelli's grade 8 class at Christ the King School
are making a difference in the lives of children in Third World Countries.
This enthusiastic and energetic group of students give up their recesses and
lunch hours to help support the work of Dr. Simone's Canadian Food For
Children. Throughout the school year the students collect "Pennies for the
Poor". Two cents helps feed a child for a full day. Once a month, they
gather and deliver gently used clothing,
toys and
candles to Dr. Simone's warehouse. The class also writes out
countless donation requests for Dr. Simone's Foundation. During the Lenten
season, they fundraise through coin cans. All coins are rolled, counted and
cashed by Mr. Cinelli's students and donated to Canadian Food for Children.
This year they raised just over $1 300.
