History & Tradition

Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School was established in the spring of 1985. It began operations as a south campus to Michael Power/St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School. In May 1986 it was named for Father John Redmond, a Basilian priest, prominent national track coach and former principal of Michael Power/St. Joseph's Catholic Secondary School.

In its first year, Father Redmond Catholic Secondary School had an enrollment of 427 students in grades 9, 10 and 11. By September of 1987 grades 12 and OAC had been added and the student population reached 1140 students. The current population is 684 students.

High academic standards in all program areas and a widely diversified extra-curricular program are maintained by a highly dedicated staff. The students who attend Father Redmond come from families which attach great value to a high quality Catholic education. The bond between the school and the community is very strong and has led to a mutually supportive, respectful relationship.

In 2006, the school officially became a regional arts centre, and our new school facility opened in the fall of 2006.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

The fundamental mandate of any Catholic school is to create a strong, rich Catholic environment, which is faithful to the philosophy and beliefs of the church. At Father Redmond Catholic Secondary School, we have attempted to fulfill this responsibility by:

  • Hiring strong, caring, supportive staff
  • Fostering cooperation, consideration and mutual respect among administration, staff, support staff and students
  • Making staff and students aware of the importance of modeling and giving witness to Catholic Christian behaviour and attitudes
  • Encouraging participation by all students in such activities as food drives, community volunteerism and school liturgies
  • Encouraging students to set aside time for personal prayer
  • Seeking feedback from the internal and external community to gain some insight into the degree to which we are succeeding in the fulfilling of our obligation.

Father Redmond Catholic Secondary School offers a varied co-curricular program. We participate in most athletic activity sponsored by the TDCAA . Each year we put on a musical . Some of the other activities include debating, public speaking,  yearbook, school newspaper and language clubs.

At Father Redmond Catholic Secondary School, we firmly believe that our mandate is best fulfilled by a strong curricular and co-curricular program rooted in a clear Catholic education philosophy which has as its goal the spiritual, intellectual and social development of the entire person while recognizing the unique needs of each individual.

TAPCE Commissioning Ceremony and presentation of Principal of Excellence Award
The Toronto Association of Parents in Catholic Education recently hosted its annual TAPCE Commissioning Ceremony of Catholic School Advisory Council Liaison Representatives to the Toronto affiliate of the Ontario Association of Parents in Catholic Education. This celebration of Catholic education focuses on the support and encouragement TAPCE provides to parents and guardians of children in the school system. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the 2006-2007 Principal Award of Excellence to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to their school to help ensure a quality education for his/her students. This individual is one who works collaboratively with parents, and who combines passion with the ability to lead, challenge and support dignity for an inclusive environment. This year’s nominees are: Rosanne Morris from St. Louis, Pasquale Tari from Blessed John XXIII, Linda Alonzi from St. Charles Garnier, Lenore Wesierski from Transfiguration of Our Lord, Gerard MacNeil from St. Agatha, Bill Zyla from Josyf Cardinal Slipyj, Jane Cramer from St. Victor, Wendy Agnew from St. Dorothy, Thad Baker from The Divine Infant, John Shea from St. Clare, Dianne Parwicki from Father John Redmond, Carmela Giardini from Mary Ward and Lillian Kurnik from Holy Angels.

The OSSLT shows the extent to which Ontario students are meeting the minimum literacy standard expected by the end of Grade 9.
