History & Tradition

Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School was established in the spring of 1985. Our school was named for Father John Redmond, a Basilian priest, educator and prominent national track and field coach.  Our roots are clearly embedded in the Basilian motto of “Teach me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge.”

As was Father Redmond’s mandate to educate the “whole student”, we remain faithful to that legacy. We are, indeed, a school of excellence with our main foci being the “Triple A” approach to education: Academics, Arts and Athletics.

Academics 

Our school is proud to house one of the three Congregated Advanced Placement Centres in the TCDSB. Highly motivated and gifted students thrive in our atmosphere of challenging curriculum and high standards. These standards are evident in our Gifted and comprehensive programs as well, and maintained by a talented and dedicated faculty. Our strong CSAC (Parent Council) is evidence of the bond between school and community as we work together in a mutually supportive and respectful relationship to educate your child. 

Arts 

In 2005, the school officially became the TCDSB’s first Regional Art Centre and our new school facility was specifically built to house our new Arts Centre. “Ars Gratia Artis” is very much the philosophy embedded in our curriculum designed for creative minds. Today, our school’s full name is Father John Redmond C.S.S and Regional Arts Centre.  Our school community consists of 993 with half of these enrolled in the Arts Program.

We boast a second-to-none Art Department for our students in the comprehensive program as well who also benefit from our state-of-the-art facility.

Each year our students are involved in several performances for our community such as a yearly Drama, Musical, Christmas Concert, Song and Dance Extravaganza as well as many more entertainment evenings showcasing our students’ artistic talents.

Athletics 

Mens sana in corpore sano”, a sound body in a sound mind is what we believe contributes to the wellness of the whole student. . We embrace Father Redmond’s legacy of sportsmanship, fair play and perseverance in developing young men and women who are strengthened intellectually, physically and spiritually. Our athletics include Badminton, Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Hockey, Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Soccer Softball, Swimming, Track and Field, Volley Ball and more.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

The fundamental  mandate of any Catholic school is to create a strong, rich Catholic environment, which is faithful to the philosophy and beliefs of the church.  At Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School and Regional Arts Centre, we have attempted to fulfill this responsibility by:   

·        Hiring strong, caring support staff.

·        Providing an opportunity for students to seek daily assistance from their Resource teachers in the Resource and Research Room.

·        Fostering co-operation, consideration and mutual respect among administration, staff, support staff and students.

·        Making staff and students aware of the importance of modeling and giving witness to Catholic Christian behavior and attitudes.

·        Encouraging participation by all students in such activities as food drives, community volunteerism and school liturgies.

·        Encouraging students to set aside time for personal prayer in our lovely chapel.

·        Seeking feedback from the internal and external community to gain some insight into the degree to which we are succeeding in the fulfilling of our obligation. 

At Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School and Regional Arts Centre, we firmly believe that our mandate is best fulfilled by a strong curricular and co-curricular program rooted in a clear Catholic education philosophy which has as its goal the spiritual, intellectual and social development of the entire person while recognizing the unique needs of each individual.

Good News from Council for Exceptional Children - Toronto Chapter 56
The following TCDSB students received the CEC ‘Yes I Can’ awards at this year’s Annual AGM and Awards’ dinner held on May 6 at the National Yacht Club:

The recipient of the Kevin Toperczer Spirit of Community Award was Meghan Hines. Meghan graduated this year from Michael Power/ St. Joseph High School and will continue her studies at McMaster University.

Meghan is also the recipient of the Ontario Council for Exceptional Children Transition Award.

Congratulations to Athletes from Father John Redmond
On Friday , April 3, 2009 the Track Team from Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School in Etobicoke travelled to York University to compete in the NIKE INDOOR GAMES.

Going into the Final Meet of the Indoor Track Season, Grade 9 student Vanessa McLeod had medalled in every race she has competed in. Previously on Friday February 20th she set the fastest 600m time in 91 years at Copps Coliseum. On Friday April 3rd, Vanessa ran the fastest 1000m since the inception of the NIKE INDOOR GAMES, breaking the old record by 5 seconds setting a new mark of 3:06.  

The Medal Results are as follows:

§      2nd Place for the Grade 9 Girls 4 by 400m Relay Team of: Mercedes McLeod, Anthia Airall, Laura Kosiba and Vanessa McLeod

§      1st Place for the Grade 9 Boys 4 by 400m Relay Team of: Isiah Weathers, Nerquaye Nettey, Raymond Brown and Dylan Dimock

§      1st Place in the 1000m for Raymond Brown

§      1st Place in the 1000m for Vanessa McLeod

Welcome back!

FJR Speakers Series

Thank you to all who attended Avrum Nadigel's talk on "The Gift of the Adolescent Symptom:  How teenage acting out heals families".  Information on his thought provoking "see, hear, understand" talk, will be distributed as soon as they are available.

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT):

The OSSLT shows the extent to which Ontario students are meeting the minimum literacy standard expected by the end of Grade 9. The test assesses the reading and writing skills as they apply to all subjects as out-lined in the Ontario Curriculum. Students must pass the OSSLT as one of the 32 requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
