History & Tradition

Holy Child Catholic School officially opened in September 1994 with a student population of approximately 240 students. It has been operating in a wing of St. Dorothy School until its facility at the Humberwood Centre was built. As a new school, a conscientious effort has been made by the school community to establish a school culture.

Holy Child Catholic School has a name that is centered in the image of Jesus as a young boy and reflects the philosophy of the school and Catholic education. The name is in reference to the scripture story found in Luke 2:40:51. The story clearly shows the child Jesus as an ideal student in a religious educational context. The school's name, Holy Child, evokes the image of Jesus at an age with which the students can identify. The passage in Luke reflects a holistic philosophy where religion and education go hand-in-hand, and an emphasis placed on a healthy body and mind. The ultimate goal of this education is to find favor in the eyes of God and humankind. The school motto--"With God we grow in body and wisdom"--was chosen through the process of community consultation.

The school community chose red, white and gold as the school colours which kingship, purity and divinity. the "Like Jesus Grew" has been presently adopted as the school's theme song. The feast day is celebrated the second week in January.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Holy Child Catholic School is committed to the vision of Catholic education as outlined in the Mission statement of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Our students come to us with a variety of strength and needs with our Catholic faith as our common bond. The religious education program, "Born of the Spirit", provides a sound basis for the development of the sacramental life of Holy Child Catholic School. This program affirms the child in all aspects of sacramental and spiritual growth. In conjunction with the Religious education program are the sacramental celebrations as prescribed by Catholic obligation and devotion.

The peer mediation program has been implemented at Holy Child. It is functioning under the guidance of two teacher mentors and involves students form grades 5 to 8. This program does provide strategies for a safe and welcoming environment to the whole student body. Enabling students to take responsibility for their own conflicts and solutions is the goal of the program. It promotes healthy responses to conflict and builds healthy relationships (community spirit). It builds self-esteem and confidence, while it helps to develop good communication, problem-solving and negotiation skills in everyday situations. Peer mediation also helps students to identify and express thought and feelings in a peaceful and respectful way.

Instructional programs are adapted to meet the holistic needs of our students. These programs are conducted in an atmosphere that is supportive, caring and stimulating in order for the students to achieve their specific learning outcomes. Teachers provide students with modified programs, social skills groups, enrichment and special project. Every effort is made to provide this atmosphere using current practices and resources as mandated by the Board and the Ministry's policies and guidelines.

Because of the IBM partnership, one of the school's initiatives will be to make all the students familiar with computers. The computer site teacher will become part of every primary class and work closely with the students to help them become computer literate. The site teacher will also be actively involved in training the teachers on the integration of computers in the regular program. The site teacher will facilitate the implementation of non-electronic technology into the rest of the curriculum.

Holy Child has begun the tradition of offering strong extra-curricular and co-curricular programs which include concerts, choir, peer mediation program, the living rosary, young authors, science and technology fairs, environmental awareness activities, partnership with the Humber Arboretum, student council mathematics competitions, music festival of the arts, and many intramural and extramural events including house leagues, volleyball, basketball, cross-country, track and field and softball.

The New Holy Child Chapel
Since the opening of Holy Child Catholic School in January 1996, teachers and students have participated in many celebrations in the chapel located on the third floor.  Our beautiful chapel has always served our school community as a sacred place decorated with statues, banners and plants. Students, teachers and parents visit the chapel regularly to reflect and pray in a holy and peaceful space within our very own building.  Classroom paraliturgies, First and ongoing reconciliation, yoga classes, choir rehearsals, rosary prayers, and seasonal celebrations (ie. Thanksgiving) are often held in the Holy Child Chapel.

In order to build upon the Chapel’s Religious aura and create a sense of meaningful reverence, part time Educational Assistance Karl Kucyzynski was asked to produce a six meter painted canvas depicting the Holy Child in different stages of His life.  The three illustrations were chosen from scripture and reflect the school’s motto: “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor”. (Luke 2, 52)

The center panel is a depiction of the Holy Child Jesus as a twelve year old boy in the temple, listening and speaking with the elders and teachers.  This painting is the central story which the school name and motto were based upon.  The painting to the left reflects the adult Jesus, as the Good Sheppard. Jesus is seen as a helper, guider, and loving protector.  The painting to the right depicts Jesus as a young boy, working with his parents to learn the carpenter’s trade.  In this portrait he is seen as a learner.  Jesus uses the knowledge of his parents to learn a new skill.

All three portraits reflect the human side of Christ.  It is this message that we impart on our students and whole Catholic community. We consistently try to have our students see Jesus as the Holy Child learning from his parents; an inquisitive teen with teachers and wise elders and as the compassionate and loving Sheppard.  These portraits are what Holy Child school encourages all students to aspire toward.  As students reflect upon these paintings, they will easily identify with and/or see themselves within the portraits.

The unveiling of our “New Chapel” took place in September.  During this time the meaning behind each portrait was reflected upon with the staff and students.  Karl Kuczynski is also a talented art instructor at Visual Arts Mississauga.  Thank you Mr. Kucyznski for your devotion and many hours spent on creating such an inspirational and artistic rendition of the Holy Child.  The students and staff are looking forward to future celebrations in the New Holy Child Chapel.
