History & Tradition

Holy Rosary Catholic School is located next to Holy Rosary Church
in midtown Toronto. Both the school and the church serve a dynamic
and diverse community that includes neighbourhoods of varied
socio-economic strata as well as people from many ethno-cultural
backgrounds.
The cornerstone of the original Holy Rosary Church was laid on
May 8, 1892. At that time a large Irish Catholic community was
settling in the St. Clair - Bathurst area. The original school was
built in 1921 and had an enrolment of 83 students in its first year.
Additions to the original school structure were made in 1963 and
1973.
Holy Rosary Catholic School in 2010 with its 260 students stands
in marked contrast to the school in 1921.
Holy Rosary is named after ‘Our Lady of Rosary’ whose feast day
is celebrated every October 7th. The Rosary also known
as the Psalter of Mary because of 150 Hail Marys corresponds to the
number of psalms in the bible, is a form of prayer originating
sometime in the 12th or 13th century, in which
fifteen decades of Hail Marys are recited using beads as counters
while meditating on a sequence of Mysteries associated with the life
of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 2003 Pope John Paul II added 5
mysteries to the rosary which honour additional moments in Christ’s
life. These new mysteries are called the mysteries of Light or
Luminous Mysteries.

Message from the Principal
On behalf of Holy Rosary
staff, students and school community, I would like to welcome you
all to our school. As principal of Holy Rosary Catholic School I am
honoured and excited to be working at such a thriving school with a
long tradition and history. My belief is that, ‘it takes a whole
village to raise a child’, hence the reason for the strong triadic
relationship between school, Church and parent community. Our
approach in everyday life and teaching is very Christ-centred.
Holy Rosary has a vibrant
academic tradition where developing literacy and numeracy skills in
our students have been a major focus. However we at Holy Rosary
also believe in developing the ‘whole child’. Our school offers
many diverse programs, activities and opportunities in the arts,
sports, clubs, etc., where our students can explore and further
develop their individual talents.
Our parents are the first
educators in their child’s life. Studies show that students will do
well in school when their parents have been actively involved in
their school life. There are many ways for parents to participate
in their child’s school life such as: volunteer to supervise on a
school excursion; offer your gifts talents to the school; and lastly
attend our Catholic School Advisory Council meetings (held once a
month).
I wish everyone a wonderful
school year together!
Chiara Mondelli
