Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School opened its
doors to grade 9 students in the fall of 1998, with grades 10 through 12 phased in over
subsequent years. The school is a co-educational community school committed to developing
and celebrating the unique gifts of every student. Staff and students will work together
to develop a tradition of academic excellence rooted in the belief that each student must
have an opportunity to develop to their full potential intellectually, physically,
socially, emotionally and spiritually.
The school is named for famed 20th century Catholic writer and journalist Marshall McLuhan.
The academic program includes all aspects of a traditional liberal arts curriculum, but takes full advantage of contemporary communication and information technology to facilitate teaching and learning within all subject areas. Resource and gifted programs ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed. The school uniform, and the code of behaviour for students, has been developed in consultation with parents and students during the spring of 1998.
Marshall McLuhan offers a unique opportunity for students to become involved in the creation of a new school community through participation in a broad range of athletic and club activities which complement our academic programs. In experiencing the opportunity to work and to learn within a community of faith, students will be encouraged to heed the Christian call of a life of service, and to apply gospel values to life's opportunities, challenges and choices.

Marshall McLuhan’s Biotech Team
Participates at the Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge
Congratulations to Marshall McLuhan’s Biotech
team, Wesley Wong, Sarah Kanzo and Christopher Hodges, who will participate
in the Sanofi-Aventis Biotech Challenge at York University April 29, 30 and
May 1, 2008. The team worked with mentors from Toronto’s Sick Children’s
Hospital and Mount Sinai along with their science teacher, Ms. Teresa
Garisto in investigating a new chemotherapy for cancer research. Their
research project is entitled, “Apoptosis via helenalin and
alph-bromoacryloyl for chemotherapy of isolated cancer cells.” This
knowledge may help kill tumour cells and further chemotherapy treatments for
cancer patients.
McLuhan celebrates Canadian Film and Theatre
On Friday, April 18 the students of
Marshall McLuhan enjoyed a full day of movies and meeting celebrities thanks
to a wonderful program called REEL Canada. Sponsored by Telefilm Canada,
this program offered the students the opportunity to view highly- acclaimed
Canadian films and to meet one member of the creative team associated with
the production of the film. Marshall McLuhan was privileged to welcome
Academy Award-nominated director and Cannes Award-winning, Atom Egoyan, the
star of Da Vinci's Code, Nicholas Campbell, and Gemini Award-winning
director, Jerry Ciccoritti. The students really enjoyed the films and
learning about the process of making movie magic!
For the first time ever, Marshall McLuhan entered the Sears Ontario Drama Festival with wonderful results. Jugband Blues, an original piece, was written and directed by Joel Chico who was joined in the cast by Bianca Gallo, Saul Lopez, Adam Ragusa, Matteo Cannarozzo, and Johnny Dabu. Mark Browne played piano and Daniel Shumka stage-managed. Joel received an Award of Excellence for his Writing/ Directing and Acting, and the cast as a whole won an Award of Excellence for Ensemble Performance. Furthermore, Jugband Blues was honoured to launch the Sears Regionals at Hart House by performing as their Guest Production on opening night.
The Arts Department and McLuhan as a whole are very proud of Joel and these hard-working actors.
