History & Tradition

Our parish was established in 1940 by Father Gregory Kelly and dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows (feast day September 15th). The first mass was celebrated in the church on December 22, 1940. Beautiful mosaics commemorating the seven sorrows of Mary were added in 1961.

Our school was founded on a 4.5-acre site in 1942. The original school was designed as a one-story brick building of 4800 square feet containing four classrooms and an auditorium. Since the building was not completed until November 1942, classes began in the basement of the church on September 8, 1942. The enrollment for the first day was 84 students. The first principal was Sister Leona, and the teachers were Sister Mary Elizabeth and Miss Rose Cassin. The St. Joseph Sisters lived in an old farm house just north of the school.

Additions to the main building were constructed in 1949, 1963 and 1968. When the 50th anniversary celebrations took place in June 1992, the opening of a new school and swimming pool as a joint venture with the City of Etobicoke was imminent.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Our school offers the following to meet the needs of our students:

  • Programs in religious education, guidance, and family life
  • A balanced curriculum
  • Special education programs with integration into regular classes
  • Specialized teachers for speech and language development and hearing impairment
  • A program for gifted students that commences in grade 5
  • A discipline code that stresses respect for all members of the school community
  • Policies designed to protect the health and maintain the safety of our pupils

Our school has an established procedure for modifying pupil programs.

  • Our school-based support team (SBST) meets monthly to review the progress of pupils who have been referred by our classroom teachers. The members are: special education teachers, the guidance counsellor, and the classroom teacher of the child referred.
  • Pupils may be referred for academic behavioural, or social concerns.
  • Pupils in need of enrichment, and gifted program candidates are also discussed.
  • Program modifications are established by this committee for use with the student.
  • Parents are consulted and advised about these changes in pupil program.
  • If necessary, a joint team meeting may be convened to seek the advice of the assessment and programming teacher, the psychometrician, or the social worker.

Our school encourages students to develop their talents by participating in a variety of co-curricular activities.

  • Every student from grade 1 to 8 is a member of our 24-team house system.
  • Each house contains 20 students drawn from all the grade levels.
  • Points are awarded for academic achievement, Christian leadership, and participation in activities such as public speaking, spoken arts, band, choir, concerts, science fair, earth club, athletics (soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross-country, track and field).

Our school invites community members to assist in meeting student needs.

  • The school association enrichment committee provides novel learning experiences for each class.
  • Many parents assist teachers in classrooms and participate in educational excursions.
  • The school association literary committee publishes “In their Own Write”, an annual collection of student poems and stories.
  • Our parents have presented the "Junior Achievement” program to our classes
  • Student teachers and co-operative education students from Bishop Allen Academy assist teachers and pupils.
  • Classes have enjoyed the artist in the school projects funded by the Toronto Catholic District School Board.
