History & Tradition

On September 4, 1956, Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School opened its doors to the children of its parish community. Every attempt was made to locate the elementary school close to the church rather than in its present northerly location.

In 1951, the church attempted to get the Forest Hills Separate School Board to help establish a separate school in the area, but the Board was bound by an agreement with the Toronto and Suburban Separate Board until 1953. The school first opened with a staff of three teachers and an enrollment of 162 pupils. Lay people were first employed to teach the students, one of the three being a parishioner.

The church was built in honour of our Blessed Mother. Our parish was in the care of the Redemptorists for 45 years until the parish was entrusted to the Archdiocese of Toronto.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

The local school, parish and family have equally vital roles to play in the education of our Catholic students. As partners in education, we have one common purpose: to create a truly Christian learning environment for our students. Our ultimate goal is to provide a caring, academic and social environment that fosters a lifelong love of learning, autonomy in decision-making, self-discipline and respect for self and others. The code of conduct was developed in response to the school community's growing concern over inappropriate behaviour. This code represents our practical response to this societal issue.

A safe arrival program is also in place. Two-way communication will ensure the whereabouts and safety of all our students. It is imperative for a parent to notify the school if a child is going to be absent. If we do not receive the call by 9:00 a.m., we will contact the parent as soon as possible. While traveling from home on the school bus, there are safety rules outlined in the code of conduct which are emphasized through morning announcements. When they arrive at the school, students know they must remain in the yard until the bell rings.

Computer Literacy

Every classroom has a computer schedule to ensure that each student would have a specific amount of time on computer. At every level, students are encouraged to enhance their literacy and numeracy skills through the use of computer to produce such pieces of work as math computations, young authors booklets, poetry and compositions. There is software with word problems to enhance problem solving skills. After much direction, they learn to work independently to enhance their autonomy.

Extra-curricular activities include craft club, chess club and various team sports which help enrich students.

Individual needs are addressed through:

  • Special education programs including primary behaviour class--school-based support team
  • English as a second language program;
  • Enrichment/gifted programs.

Programs will be adapted to meet the changing needs of our students.

TCDSB Opens Parenting and Family Literacy Centres
The Toronto Catholic District School Board has opened eight new Parenting and Family Literacy Centres in its schools. An opening ceremony took place take place on November 20th at St. Dorothy Catholic School with Open Houses taking place at all locations the same day.  A large gathering of families from the St. Dorothy centre, TCDSB superintendents, trustees, Ministry representatives and the school’s parish priest were on hand to show support for the program.  The literacy centre prepares children, up to six years of age, for entering a formal school setting.  The program also enthusiastically encourages families to be active members of their children’s learning experiences.  These centres focus on language, numbers and social skills through play, music and reading. The following schools now have Parenting and Family Literacy Centres: Blessed John XXIII Catholic School, Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School, St. Barbara Catholic School,  St. Barnabas Catholic School, St. Charles Garnier Catholic School, St. Dorothy Catholic School, St. Wilfrid Catholic School, St. Francis de Sales Catholic School.  Parenting and Family Literacy Centres are school based programs where parents/caregivers and children, birth to six years of age, participate in play-based activities that focus on the development of early literacy and numeracy skills.  Regular centre hours vary from location to location. Centres at Blessed John, Our Lady of the Assumption, St. Barbara, St. Barnabas, St. Charles Garnier, St. Dorothy and St. Wilfrid are generally open in the mornings on regular school days, while the centre at St. Francis de Sales is open in the afternoons.
