True wisdom is gained through years of experience and remembering.
Mary, as Jesus' mother, showed this quality by cherishing and reflecting on the events of
her Son's life. For this, we call her the Seat of Wisdom and for this, we are proud to
have our school named for Our Lady of Wisdom.
Founded as the first school in Annunciation Parish in 1959, the school offered programs to both French-speaking and English-speaking students. The French instructional unit was discontinued when Ste-Madeleine was opened. As the years passed and the number of school aged children living in the area decreased, the school declined in numbers.
In 1987, it was felt that Our Lady of Wisdom would be an ideal location for instruction of French immersion. The program started in senior kindergarten. The French immersion program is thriving and continuing to grow each year.
A strong community spirit has been built up over the years. We continue to enjoy strong links with Annunciation Parish and with the parents who bring their children to our school from a number of communities.
School environment
Our major focus in the school is to provide the students with a learning environment where Gospel values and Catholic doctrine permeate the curriculum. The religious education and family life programs form the foundation for growth. A variety of activities planned in conjunction with the parish provide students with opportunities to practise their faith.
As has been indicated by numerous parents, a safe and welcoming environment is critical to the success of the school. Our safe arrival program assists us in making sure all students are accounted for. Parents are asked to call the school to inform us of their child's absence. Students may not leave the school grounds during school hours without a signed note by a parent or a guardian.
To ensure the safety of the students in the school, guidelines for behaviour written in the Parent-Student Handbook establish clearly what is expected from everyone in the school.
Curriculum initiatives
The school is developing programs which are consistent with Ministry of Education documents.
Emphasis is also being placed on increasing the computer literacy of the students. A major goal for this year is to acquire more French software to enhance the program being taught in the classroom.
Co-curricular programs
The students of Our Lady of Wisdom are fortunate in the fact that many teachers volunteer their time and effort to a wide variety of co-curricular activities. House leagues and school teams enhance the sense of community, and provide the students with occasions to develop school spirit.
Various celebrations throughout the year complement the academic program in the school. To mention only a few, in the fall term, a Halloween party involves the whole school both in the preparation and in the festivities. A moving Remembrance Day service gives the students the experience of learning about the contributions of our Canadian Forces during the war years. A Christmas concert gives the whole community an opportunity to celebrate the birth of Jesus and enjoy the festive season. A science fair provides the students with the occasion to practise principles of the scientific method. Catholic Education Week activities acknowledge the students' work.
